Need FishLake info please
#1
Going to be going to Fish Lake with some friends this weekend. I have never been there before, and would like to get some info on what is there. I usually flyfish, so info relating to flyfishing would be best, although, if that doesn't work, I will always throw whatever else will do the trick. I will probably be in a float tube, or possibly rent a boat. Any and all info will be greatly appreciated.

I havent really heard of much success fly fishing on fish lake, most people fish the weed line alot of them verticle jigging tipping their jig with pearch meat the fish are deep though. there are abundant pearch there and all you need is a small hook with some worm on it to catch them. there are macks, splake, pearch, rainbows, suckers, and an occasional carp. I would recommend really bundling up though if you do float in the water, it is COLD. but if you wanted to there are many smaller streams with small wild trout that you could fly fish for in the fish lake area. Good Luck

He is right,My dad went fly fishing and only caught one little perch, and he has had 40 fish days on the fly,he said he tried everything.

If your going up and want to try to catch splake, catch a few perch on the weed line with a small 1/16 oz jig and worm, just let it down vertical on the weed line, you can see where they end, start at the shore and go out 50ft off shore, and they will cut of access to the main lake if you dont launch where there is a clearing thru them.

Well catch some perch, put on a 1/8 to 1/2oz. jig head with white 3" tube or grub, put a nice chunk of perch meat on there but not to big,and drop down to the bottom, about 30ft outside the weed line, lift your rod tip then drop it slow with a semi tight line, try to let it drop naturally though,if it stops before you think it reachs the bottom set the hook.switch up the jiging style though you never know what the fish want on different days, put in some time and i'm sure you will catch some, just a heads up,its deep on the north end,it steps off fast, the weed edge over there sits in about 25ft,and drops off fast, you can be in 50 feet of water 30ft from the weed line,so it takes a little bit of time to get to the bottom,so the heavier jig helps get ya to the fish zone faster, but also limits the action of the jig.

Hope you catch some,.

water temp was 55 on friday and 53 on sunday,so it cooling off fast.dress warm and be safe.

Jacod, don't give up on fly fishing up at Fish Lake without giving it a try first. October is my favorite time of year to fly fish Fish Lake. Will you be fishing from shore or from a tube? If in a tube, try going out in front of Twin Creeks (out from the main lodge) and drag some wooley buggers around. If you are fishing from shore, fish the mouth of Twin Creeks (where it empties into the lake). Remember, Twin Creeks is closed to fishing, so don't fish the creek. But, do go walk up the creek and take a look at the spawning Browns. Just don't take your rod with you! Fly fishing the Twin Creeks area this time of year can produce some really big fish. The Browns are spawing, the splake are trying to spawn, and you even get some big macs cruising around also. The other advice that has been given on this thread is good, jigging will produce fish. But, don't give up on fly fishing until you have given it an honest effort!

WOW, is about all I can say...Thanks a lot so far for all of the info. I feel as though I now have a fairly decent chance at catching a fish or two. I will for sure report when I return.

Thanks again.

jacobl,

Fly fishing does work at Fish Lake. I was told that you can't even fish from shore there. But one time I was there and I could see fish rising relatively near shore. When I grabbed my pole to try for the rising fish I was told by all the nay sayers that I was wasting my time. Long story short, in no time everybody camping with me was down on the SHORE using a FLY and bubble rig and CATCHING nice RAINBOWS too. The fish in Fish Lake don't know that they're not supposed to take flies. You can troll the flies with success too. I did. So go have fun fishing with your best known technique and you can/will do well. Good luck.

I am with PBH on this one...definitely try fishing Fish Lake with flies...my suggestion would be to forget about the rainbows and go for the splake, browns, and lake trout. Like PBH said, try the Twin Creeks area and throw large buggers, leeches, or even zonkers. Now is definitely the time to fly fish up there...I wait until this time every year to hit it and I hit it hard until it starts to freeze. The splake and lake trout are definitely active this time of year.

If Twin Creeks isn't working you can fish the East side of Fishlake from the shore (in waders). We usually fish the evening from sundown til the moon rises or at this time of the year until your eyelets freeze and your flyline no longer slides through them. The east side can either be reached by boat or by 4wd. If you decide to drive or walk over go to the south end, there is a road the turns right (east) and goes around the south end of the lake over to the east side (The turnoff is just before you reach the mallard bay turnoff) and then hike to the area near the beaver lodge and use the same flies as mentioned in the previous posts.
