catching minnows
#1
I've been thinking of trying to pick up some minnows in CJ and bought a minnow trap. I know that we can't use live minnows to fish with in Idaho.[frown] I also see in some fishing catalogs, where there are minnow nets that you can throw out and retrieve, and even a minnow net with a handle like a landing net. I haven't found any info as to whether these nets are legal to use. What say you ?

I dont know about the nets but Ive trapped them using dog food and used them dead. Sometimes they have been killer on smallmouths and other times not so much.
Good Luck.

Sportsmans usually has throw nets also. I have used mine when they shut off the dry bed in April (which is coming up soon). People get tons of tiny whitefish minnows for use later in the year. You can also get Yellow Perch this way. Seine nets aren't allowed on the dry bed, but everything I've seen says throw nets are.

Be careful with whitefish, even minnows. They are considered gamefish, so watch your limits.

That is correct you can use game fish minnows as bait/ But you can't have in your poisson more than the legal limit 6 trout 25 whitefish . On the dry beds they WILL give you a ticket for netting more than the limit. This is also true in your freezer you can only have the posted limit or risk being fined.

Thanks for that info. I've been fishing all my life (73 years young), but I'm scratching my head on the term "dry beds". I haven't heard that term before. Want to explain ? [:/]

Guessing they are receding to the great feeder canals that come out of the Sf of the snake, they get shut down in April for maintainance in April and its legal to use nets to catch fish.

Yes, the Great Feeder, there are some older posts of mine since I bring this up every year Smile

True, you can only have 25 whitefish, but 25 per person for the guy with his 3 sons there can be a pretty good haul. As the dry bed dries up and the water starts to get low on oxygen the fish start dying anyways. Most of the whitefish get thrown on the bank to die so the trout have a better chance. A few people take some of the bigger whitefish to eat (including me, but I've never hit 25 big ones and I don't really use minnows).

You can also Snag or wade in with a big dip net.

On General throw net rules, you can probably use one anywhere there are suckers/carp or perch. Any game fish have to be released of course, and I don't know how useful it would be. I can't really imagine rowing a boat around Roberts trying to catch perch (although you can also use traps like crawdad traps for perch and keep them so that might work in Roberts if you can find a bait they like).
