Henrys opener
#1
Even though I knew the opener was going to be much different than the last few years, I headed to Henrys anyways. And as expected, it was much slower. Spoke to one of the biologists the night before and she said that the week prior the fish had almost completely moved off shore. She also said that their gill netting survey resulted in a lot more fish than usual (normally she said they get about 10-12 fish per net, but this time they were getting in the 20s). So there are plenty of fish.

Now to the fishing. Started early Saturday and ended early today (Monday). The first two days I had to work for double digits and I only got a half dozen day but only had a few hours. As already stated on other threads, there was wind, snow, and rain. The fish did seem to push off shore, but I also actually caught half my fish within the first 10 feet and all of these fish were brookies. All of the cutts I caught were farther out.

I caught some fish in the four pound class but no hogs this time around. I had two break offs, one was my fault trying to put my gopro on and the other was due to some guy not paying attention. I did see a few 6-8 pounders caught. I caught a nice 20 inch brookie, which isn't huge for Henrys but is probably my largest to date. Can't wait until I get the opportunity for a 20 inch male in full color, going to be a while for that though.

I caught most on worms, jigs, or spoons. I spent a lot of time driving around checking out different locations, but ended up mainly fishing the cliffs.

Even though it was slower than normal, I had many hours of fishing next to no one. The last day was flat calm weather, but the other days were cold and wet, but all of it was a blast as always.

Also got the new gopro and tried it out for the first time. See if I can post some videos. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hrqLm2r5S8

Sounds like you got in to some hogs. And you showed up a day early [Wink]

This new video posting thing on BFT is crappy. I used the correct html code and put it in the embed area and it still won't play for me. I guess high def videos don't work too well on BFT.

sounds like you had a blast. I was up friday through sunday and cam home early. wasnt feeling the greatest. All my fishing was done wading the banks on the north shore. Caught on nice cutt and lost a 21-22ish brookie. I lost it right at my feet as we were netting it. I might have said a few bad words haha. Man it was a depressing feeling. Most of the fish caught were definately from boats. but I did see some bank anglers do well. I got tired of the swells, so we headed down to the outlet and caught countless fish on midges a few of them were nice 18+ brookies. I took my 3 wt along, which made for a fun day of fishing.

You said you fished the cliffs area. Is it a little deeper than other areas? The majority of brookies I have caught have been in deeper water on sharp drops.

Those are some nice fish you got to handle there. That scenery is pretty impressive too. One of these days I will end up making the treck up north to fish it.....one day. Thanks for the post and pics.
