I like to think that those of us who frequent fishing message boards, particularly BFT, have extraordinary common courtesy when it comes to giving each other a little room to fish unmolested.
On Flaming Gorge on Monday of this week, that notion was dispelled. A buddy and I went out with Tarponjim and launched early and as expected Jim put us on the fish. There were several boats fishing the large bay, but all were respectful, each boat fishing their own hump.
Then my buddy and I doubled up on a couple of big fish and after snapping pics one of those other boats turned and made a beeline for our position. They stopped 100 feet or so away and began hunting the same hump we were fishing. Incredibly rude, but it got worse. We doubled up again, and by the time we had a picture of my buddy with his fish, the BFT boat was less than 40 feet from us. This on a 42,000 acre lake! And every hump had fish on it.
Jim asked politely whether they were really going to fish that close to us and they got the message and left. He certainly was nicer about it than I would have been.
I was really appalled at that kind of behavior from a couple of respected Utah BFT members. I'm not naming names. They know who they are. They need to learn to go find their own fish.
And everybody else, please be courteous to your fellow anglers and give them some room. If we want to fish with friends, we'll bring our own.

Before I moved to Utah I'd do a bit of inshore fishing in socal. Out there was the same way, if you were catching fish or sometimes people without decent sonar equipment would follow you around and anchor real close. Close enough that to get them away we'd tie on 3 or 4oz sinkers and just cast into them, after splashing just feet away from the boat or after actually banging one into or off of the boat they'd get the idea it wasn't cool to encroach.
It's pretty lame to encroach on someone else's spot without asking. Sorry for your troubles.

I know the feeling Don! had the same thing happen to me in the winter, except there was only us and one other boat on the whole dam bay,and we caught 2 fish in a few minutes and they were right on top of us. unbelievable!!And get this I was anchored at the time and they hooked a fish and it got tangled around my anchor rope! [crazy] I think thats a little bit close!! and they are regulars at the Gorge too!

It is good to be polite, but some people think they own the whole lake. Seems just as many of those, as those who get to close. I've more problems with guides and fly fishermen on the Green thinking we are to close. We were anchored and a guide wanted us to move for his drift line as he came down. We moved, easier. Another flyfisherman felt I was in his hole, even though I was out of range of his cast, he felt he owned the whole hole, we were fishing different techniques, I a jig, spinning, casting beyond anything he could reach, and not coming through anything he was fishing. He was very impolite. I have been wrong on the lakes at times, more by accident, a factor of wind, or being pushed by shallows when trolling deep. I am going to try to give wider berth from now on. It is better to have a enjoyable time, then to be all about the fish.
I wish they would give tickets to the power squad for being to close though.

Totally agree with you Uintaman. Some guides think they own the river or lake. Sounds like the original poster had one of those kind of guides. What's tough is even though the body of water may be large, (like the Gorge & Green River) the areas that hold certain species and sizes of fish may be limited making the body of water seem much smaller than it actually is.
Way to go on the doubles. Glad the other boat did not have any negative impact on your fishing.

Jiggy-
On a 42,000 acre lake it is complete nonsense to come fish within 40 feet of another boat, I don't care what the circumstances are. Whether I'm with a guide or by myself, I expect some common courtesy. You should, too.

honestly it is a great thing that you guys still had some class. If they did that to me I would have been pissed. I probably just would have just yelled "FIND YOUR OWN DAMN FISH!" or something like that. [ ]
Nice job on the doubles.

Yeah, this always sucks, and it seems to happen to me about once a year or so. I always try to give people room, even if it means finding another area to fish.
A few years back I was fishing Newton with a couple of buds. We were working the east shoreline heading north, and this other boat passes us, and then proceeds to pull up to the same bank that we're fishing 100 feet in front of us, and starts working the same bank in the same direction! They were working slower than us, so once we got closer I just motored around them and did the same thing to them. Still, it irritated the hell out of me, but I got my revenge when I caught our only musky of the day a few hundred feet in front of them while they watched!
Another time we were down at Newcastle fishing wipers, and had already caught several nice fish. Well these two local bozo's in a tin bath tub come cruising up towards us trolling. We were about 60 feet from the shore and casting towards it. It quickly became apparent that they planned to troll right between us and the shore... right where we were casting. I hollard at them "surley you're not going to troll between us and the shore?" and dude says 'we'll just be a second" Well then I went off and words were exchanged, and at the last second, he did a hard right turn, then left turn and went behind us. As he swings a hard left, they pick up a fish! He would have never gotten that fish if I hadn't yelled at him. What a dip$^%@!

This would piss me off if it happened to me. But in this case, all I can do is laugh. You reap what you sow.

Hi Don,

I heard there was a post complaining about my boat navigation on the Gorge. So I decided to come check it out. Sure nuf …

Just to make the record clear, the reason we passed by you in that area had absolutely nothing to do with wanting your fish or trying to follow you or anything like that. Sorry to burst your bubble but the reason we were there had nothing to do with you at all.

Now, having said that, I do agree we shouldn’t have been in an area near you. We passed close enough to actually hear you talk. And that, I should have avoided. Please accept my sincere apologies.

On another note, I understand you got doubles. Very nice … way to go.

What a humble reply, Old Coot.
Too bad there can't be more civility like this response on some of these threads.

Gotta lot of respect for a man to "man up" and do the right thing. It would be nice to have more people like Coot, instead of all the cry baby finger pointing, blame everyone else type of people..

I totally agree, if Don had bothered to ask Ralph in a PM what had happened, this thread could have been avoided but some people always think it is always about them and there could never be another reason why shit happens. Sad but that is just the way some people think. That being said, I can understand his way of thinking because we all think that way from time to time but it is really amazing that we can't give each other the benefit of the doubt before jumping to conclusions.

I didn't need to ask what happened wh2. I saw it with my own eyes. I expereienced it. And the boat didn't just "pass by". It sat there for a long time.
The bottom line is that it was incredibly discourteous. Old Coot agrees with that. Give people some room. Show common courtesy and this topic can be avoided. There was no reason it had to happen.
That being said, I accept Old Coot's apology, even if I don't necessarily buy the "explanation".

One thing that none of us can do is look into the heart of another person. Yes, you were there but you still don't know what lead up to it happeneing or do you know the person. He might not feel the need to explain what really happened but if you knew Ralph you would know what he did was not intentional, as you claim. A mistake was made and Ralph agreed to that point, was it intentional, that is a point that is not so clear. Either way you have voiced your concern and I hope you are happy with the outcome. Have a great day Don.
