LP Kokanee
#1
Tried trolling at LP today. I have dragged a few lures behind a boat before, but this was my first time really trolling. My buddy recently purchased some gear, so after fishing for other species we gave it a shot. It started getting hot by the time we started, so we only trolled for a couple hours.

Took a while to figure out the right depth. We got a few hits, my friend got one to the boat but it got off, then he finally landed one. His first one ever. We took off shortly after that. I think it was a pretty nice one, at 17 3/4 in.

We were just running mono, using a lake troll with a wedding ring. Just starting out, we were pretty unsure of our trolling depth. Should leadcore be the next purchase, or would a line counter reel be more effective?

That is a nice fish! If you can afford it get a cannon mini troll, downriggers are by far the best way to fish for Kokes. I have tryed leaded line, counter reels and found that downriggers are way better. You can set to exact depths and once the fish pulls the line out of the release it's you and the fish, and not having to drag in leaded line and a troll and fish.

Koke-Fiend is spot on, but if you can't afford a downrigger, lead core is the way to go. We were using 2 Penn downriggers the other day and one lead core, and the lead core bested the dr's combined! You never know. Keep your speed at 1.5-1.7, and.....always look for the trash floating on top. Just like the ocean rip tides, they will frequently be under the trash lines. Not many people know that. Watch and you will see them surface feeding in those areas. The fish aren't staging yet, and thus are still somewhat scattered. Fishing in the narrows and the entrance to them will just get better and better. Nice fish, by the way. Mike

I appreciate the suggestions.

Looking at the reviews online, the mini troll doesn't get a very high rating. However, there are other Cannons that cost just a little more and score much higher. I'm honestly not too crazy about the trolling technique. I like to be more hands on and prefer casting. But im all about catching fish, and if trolling is whats producing fish, then I would like to have that option avaliable. [Smile]

Thanks again.

There are different styles and features on riggers, might be worth a hands on at a good sports store. Or check out what others have, and how they like them or don't.
Personally have a couple Cannons - and they have the vertical spool - I think I like that better.

One suggestion - if you can - go electric. Being able to zip up and down quickly is very helpful - if you run into sudden changes in depths, Or get into fish action!

Consider the used market. I got two electric Cannons for $200, one has a beat up body, but the gears and gizmos all work. I've only used the one, cuz I couldn't get my boy to run the other. Sure they're older, but I could have easily spent more just getting a decent single one.

I was using the rigger's holder for the ball rig, then have tried running sideplaners, or dipsy diver for a second line out that side.
There's a simple $10 book on downriggers you can get from Cabelas. There's better books, but it gives a good basis of the tool. Basic Trolling or Trolling Basics.

This was a good book and covered a lot about trolling, downriggers. (click the pic - it's a link to Amazon)
