Salmon River Setup, Allen Olympic Rod Review
#1
Hey fellow BFTer's, I'm looking on making my first trek up to the salmon river this fall with my pops. Having gotten addicted to fly fishing, I want to stick to just that. My pops and everyone he goes with are solely bait casters. No fly fisherman. So I'm kinda left in the dark about a setup.

I'm debating between a switch rod, that can do multiple things, but you need all the lines to do so. Lately I've been leaning more so to going to a spey rod, which is completely new to me.

Allen has their two handed Olympic rod for cheap right now, heard good things. Wondering if anyone has test drove it alone with others for comparison. Also if they're any recommendations for line. I am guessing late fall, fish are going to be at the bottom. So mostly using sink tips. There's a bunch of types too that I can't get my head around, scandi, Skagit, etc. I have not a clue really. Looking for someone whose been there and done that, that could get me headed in the right direction. Also looking for a reel recommendations.

Sorry for any typing, sent from my phone.

A forum I hit in which Justin and Evan post on, these are great rods.
Maybe call or PM Evan and ask him. The lines are in grains, not so much the rod weight.
I still have that near new 12' 7 wt Rivendell as well for $50. If interested, give a shout.

Spey/switch isn't necessarily the only way you'll want to fish up there, but it is quite nice to be able to get a streamer clear across the river with no back cast. I fished the Salmon for the first time this spring bottom bouncing the whole time and managed to do "OK".

And the Alpha II finally showed up today! Man on man.... I think I'm indentured for life with Allen! Top quality product, this thing is SMOOTH as butter! This thing is HUGE! I'm used to my little Konic 2.

Again, can't wait to get the line on it and hit the water! Hit me up if anyone knows of some good places to go practice or anyone that's interesting in giving some pointers on this baby!
