LB cat
#1
Picked up this biggun' today at LB. Male or female? It is either ready to give birth to a crowd or it just ate a large animal?? Gut on this thing looked like it swallowed a football. Little over 7 pounds, 27 inches -- not quite long enough to upgrade my contest score. Released him/her and kept the smaller ones..

Grandson and I caught four today, the others in the 22 inch range. Got 'em on small white bass. Nice day. Happy kid.

Great looking cat. It has been eating good.

Just and FYI the catfish contest ended on the last day of August.

[cool][#0000ff]That's a fat mama cat. Spawn is long over so it is probably full of the little white bass that are so thick right now.[/#0000ff]

TD, how do ya know? Dumb question (how do you tell the difference between girls and boys?) but I have never observed any external genitalia on cat fish. Easier to tell during the spawn when the males take on the steel gray color but other than that how do you determin the sex of a cat fish? The males stockier with bigger heads? Coloration? No hooked jaw like some trout have... just wonderin', and thanks in advance for any sex ed info you might offer.

Bow nut, thanks for the info. Now I have a good excuse for the northern guys kicking butt... I just ran out of time.[Wink] Next year....

[#0000ff]In Utah waters most male cats are easily identified by having heads wider than their bodies and a more greyish coloration...turning even darker at spawning time. Their mouths are also larger in proportion...with big fat lips at times.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Females are usually more of a light or coppery color...with heads that are slightly narrower than their body at its widest part. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]But, there are waters and times when even the females turn a darker grey color so you have to pay attention to the shape. Males will almost always have a skinnier body and will weigh less for the same length than females.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]In the attached pic the fish on the left is a male and the one on the right is female. As they get bigger the differences are even more pronounced.[/#0000ff]
