The Old Ways

After a few days of dries and nymphs and picking up one here and there, I thought maybe I ought to try what my Grandpa and Great Uncles used to go to when there weren't bugs on top. I tied up some soft hackle wets and started swinging them on the river. Well I caught the hell out of the browns. Last night I had 2 fish on at once. I guess what I'm getting at is,maybe fishermen have forgotten how effective swinging a wet fly is, but the fish haven't. Maybe I'll break out the old bamboo rod in the morning! Bob

I agree and have mention wet or softhackles quite often.
What colors? Orange and Olive are my favs.

The ones I had the best luck with were on a Tiemco 200R 3X # 16, red or copper wire body, rusty brown ice dub thorax, partridge hackle. Also caught a few with green wire body,olive hares ear thorax, partridge.Dai-Riki 075,size 16.

Check out the books written by Sylvester Nymes. He was a soft hackle guru. Passed away a few years back. Met him at a couple of the Idaho shows and always willing to answer questions. Partridge and orange is a killer on the middle Provo. Now after this I'll have to think about fishing with some. Try You Tube And search for soft hackle flies.

Even the glow bug I fish for Carp with is a softhackle LOL.
Here is one of my favorites. I called it the Norther Lights cause it changes colors



And the Transformer that is tied with silk as the outer thread. Changes colors when wet. On the left it s wet, right it is dry

For me personally they seem to be more effective in afternoon/evenings... especially "happy hour" []

Classic wet-fly method is to cast across and down, then let the fly swing until it is directly down current from you. You can maneuver the rod to get the fly near any likely cover, also. Let the fly hang in the current for a second or two before you pick up to cast again. Strikes are HARD, so keep the tip up or you'll pop a lot of tippets.

Work longer casts until you've probed a stretch thoroughly, then take a few steps downstream and shorten line to begin again.
