hooks rigs for ice fishing
#1
Jan1 2013 you can use 3 hook per line i like to tie a jig on the end of my line and another hook up the line 12 to 14 inches to catch the cut's and if im fishing for rain bows its about 18 to 24 . im useing the jig like a drop shot but i still catch fish on it most of the time its the bigger bows that it the jig but i break off at the knot for the other hook alot with another hook in my line i fear i'll lose even more fish i have tried many different knots can any show me some way to do this right ( most of the time i break off its on the hook set)

I'd suspect the type of knot you're tying is the culprit. a poorly or improperly tied knot will absolutely kill your line strength. When I want a dropper above the end of the line, i tie a dropper loop. Once tied you can pass the loop of the dropper through the hook eye and back over your jig and leave it on a doubled line, or cut one end of the dropper and tie an upper jig on as usual. Here is a link to an animation: http://www.animatedknots.com/dropperloop/index.php?Categ=typemidloops&LogoImage=LogoGrog.jpg&Website=www.animatedknots.com

You don't HAVE to use 3 hooks.

And we didn't have to use two, but some like it...LOL WOW, imagine, Idaho is 5. Makes wash lining a blast though.

Duck dog Sounds like are doing what we do fly fishing called deep nymphing.
When I fish waters 10' to 30', I use straight P-Line attached directly to the fly line. With this long a leader, casting turns into lobbing, but I am talking about float Tube/Pontoon/ boat applications.
I use a slip indicator as well and floating line.
Drop it straight down using a bugger, nymph or Chironomid. I then tie 12" tags using a Triple Surgeons Knot. I was using a Double but had many larger Carp break this off. Triple seems to be the ticket and easy to tie.

Three hooks will be interesting. We can now cover pupa/nymph, emerger, & dry stages all at once...LOL

what im doing with the jig is just twitching it in the mud on the bottom this stirs up the mud and get those lateral lines on the fish. they love it but the bite is so light that if you are not holding your line in between your finger youll miss them even being there. i have even missed feeling them holding my line while im jigging so any 3 way spliters will not work

like a 3-way swivel or knot that extends the hook off the main line

That is what I thought, but I was talking tags. Tying 6" to 12" of whatever material you use and tie the tag right to the leader. I would tie the first tag 3' up from the bottom flie (tied on the end of the leader) so that the second flie is a floating 2' to 2 1/2' up. I will do the third the same way.
So I am fishing in two or three different zones.
I have not tried swivels but I know some fly fishers do.

hehehe, luv it, I always wanted to try a hares ear, prince nymph and scud on one line. This next year is going to be interesting.

@duckdog1us not steal your post so I guess I should reply, 1 rig is to use the swivels that have 3 way connector on them since your ice fishing and just dropping your line down the hole these work perfect. Connect to your main line the fist then use leader to connect the the other two. I usually put a couple split shot on each leader to get the biat down fater past the dinks

Or the more traditional way as FG mentioned is a Drop shot rig with your weight at the bottom and your two jigs further up from it. I find a instead of feeding the line through the jig eye I create a loop then fold the loop flat so the entire loop feed through the jig eye then fold the loop around the jig. this will crate a so called loop to loop connection. Plus it adjustable it will allow you to move the jig up and down the line

I typically do not put the weight on the bottom. Actually, I put the weight at the knot for the first tag so all flies can wiggle.
As far as the tags, another alternative that I do use is Gamakatsu "Dropper Beads" You can slide these up or down. They turn so no twisting. I like them better than swivels.

And these rubber stoppers

i use the jig on the bottom as the drop shot thats the only place to put wait or it changes the action of the bait hooks up the line they need to fall unweighted to the bottom and moved slowly but with the knots up the line it cause weak points and i break off the jig when i get bigger fish on it

Check out the Dropper beads then. Fish Tech carries them. You would probably want medium. You tie the tags to the dropper bead and slide the bead onto the line.

[cool][#0000ff]I also like to fish a tandem rig under the ice. But it has gotten me in trouble a few times when the second hook gets snagged on the bottom of the hole when I am trying to get a good sized fish up through it...both the bottom and the top hook have that potential. But I still do it. The rewards outweigh the occasional Funniest Video scenario.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I seldom encounter a bite so light that it can't be felt unless the top hook is hardwired to the line. In fact, my top jig is often on at least 3 inches of leader to give it more wiggle and articulation. And it hangs down enough that I can usually detect any bites on it without a spring bobber. But I'm a sensitive kinda guy.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I also fish a heavier jig on the bottom as a drop shot weight. I like to pound the bottom a bit to stir up some sediment and call in the fishies. Then I hang it a few inches off the bottom...with the jig above it being another foot to 18 inches up. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Everybody has their own idea of what works best. And you can't argue with success. If what you are using produces for you...on the lakes you fish and for the species you are after...then THAT is exactly the right way to fish...for you.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I may suggest something I have used in the past to accomplish having a tight knot...and a strong knot...where the second hook attaches. That is to use a "snell knot" to attach a plain long-shank Aberdeen hook to the line...and then leave a long "tag" end upon which to tie the end jig. You can put a jig on the hook or just add some bait. This makes for a direct attachment all the way through and that knot is about as strong as any connection you can make at that point.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Here is an animated demo of tying the snell knot:[/#0000ff]

tube dude that is exactly what i do right down to the knot but it still breaks one me if that the strongest way then ill stick with it sound like we have a few of the same tactics what i do know is how to get some of the big trout maybe we should spend a day chasing these fish and as far as the soft bite they would not even move a spring bobber its just one tap and you better be right one it but that may be that home made bait i use lol
