I have an 8" lazer hand auger. After being a nice fellow fisherman towards the end of last season and letting some people borrow my auger to cut some holes, I noticed the blades were a little loose and after tightening, the auger did not work the same. I bought brand new blades and put them on and it was still very labor intensive to get a hole even through a few inches of ice.
I believe that the angle of the blades was somehow messed up.
Does anyone know anybody who does work on augers? Or does anyone have advice on how to get this thing back in working order?

I am afraid that is a really tall order to fill. I have never heard of any one repairing one like this. once they are off center they are pretty much done for. There was a brand being sold a few years back that was off right out of the box,guys ended up throwing them away. I always cringe when I see a guy bang them on the ice after drilling a hole.

after few years of use I noticed mine started to do that too so I bought some new blades also. it would still wander on the ice before it would start cutting a hole. I tried shimming it and heating and tweaking it to no avail. I finally ended up splurging and buying and electric ice auger. best move I ever made.

It sounds lke you might need to buy a new auger but you could do one last thing, contact the maker. Most have on-line sites, with either a phone number or an Email address you can contact. Good luck.

6" will get you through the ice easier but it also has it's drawbacks. hole ices up easier, getting fish through is more difficult,finding replacement blades is harder,more chance of breaking line on ice,can be more expencive then 8".

If you are serious about a new one I would take a long hard look at a Nils auger. They do cost ya, but there is no explaining how much better they cut...its almost effortless.My buddies 8" Nils cuts with much MUCH less effort than my 6" strikemaster. I plan on selling my 8" gas auger and buying a 8" Nils instead. The weight trade off and price of mind of never having a breakdown or forgetting to fill up with gas is worth it to me.

FYI the Nils power augers come with a handle to switch to a regular hand auger. Run out of gas just screw on the handle and away you go. Best of both worlds..
