My buddy got one 3 weeks ago with the Cordless drill atachment. It is really cool. It is a 6in and drill thru 12 in of ice in about 5 seconds. It has the hand crank but we have not used it. The cordless adapter was about $30 bucks more...and worth it.

Get the 8" you won't be sorry you did. Its much much easier to drill an 8" hole with a Nils than a 6" with a strikenaster.

+1 on the Nils 8 inch. I've got one and it's awesome! This weekend I drilled I don't know how many holes trying to find the fish. The ice was about 18 inches and my arms didn't even start to get tired! I didn't time it but I don't think each hole took more than 15 or 20 seconds to drill.
I used to want a gas auger till I got my Nils...

I haven't gotten out too much yet this winter, and I have never tried any other augers. But I bet they aren't as good as a Nils.

I have a 6in Nils. I have no problem drilling through 12 to 24inches of ice. 24 is the thickest I have tried so far. If I can do it, you should have NO problem. Take care of the blade and don't let anyone drop or bang it on the ice, and it will take care of any holes you need.

I should admit that I am a 61 year old teenage girl. [laugh][laugh][laugh][Wink]

Love the Nils. Punched 20 today with no problems. Have punched 30 - 40 a day for 3 days straight without Tyllenol. Worth every penny.

I owned the 6 inch nils for probably 4 years and compared to other hand augers it was way better, but if you are thinking of it compared to a power auger then get a power auger. Even with the nils, cutting holes by hand sucks, especially if you move around at all or the ice is thick. I now run the 8 inch nils power auger and I would never go back to drilling by hand. I would say even if you can only afford a low budget power auger it is still better than cutting by hand.

thanks for the info i was looking a getting a new jiffy propane auger next year but for the price i could get a gas nils auger and they come with a hand crank just in case they break down or you run out of gas i really like that this year i have been using a 6inch mora that is like 30 plus years old it was my dads when we lived in wyoming a buddy of mine has a eskimo 10inch gas auger but that thing is by no means easy it is heavy and you still have to push down to get it to cut good so i think for me a hand crank nils would be the way to go i dont know guess i have till next year to make up my mind

Totally agree. After my last marathon drill fest I decided I need to go with a power head. Have to wait for a good deal but I will stick with Nils all the way.

If you could share what cordless drill and torque it has I would surely appreciate knowing.

[quote idahopanfish]If you could share what cordless drill and torque it has I would surely appreciate knowing.[/quote]I don't mean to but in but I use a 36 Volt Bosch cordless drill with an ice kicker 2 reduction box with my nils 8" auger. I can get anywhere from 50-100 holes depending on how cold it is. If you can find a way to keep your batteries warm no problem getting the 100 holes out of 2 batteries.

I'm going to be a dissenter to this group. I've used a number of Nil's augers ranging from 6" to 8" and I personally don't think they work any better than my Strike Master Mora 7". Especially if you consider that the Nil's cost a fair bit more. I must have gotten a real gem when I got my SM???

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying the Nil's isn't a good auger, I just don't see that its any better than a SMM and it costs nearly twice as much.

That's my 2 cents.

You run your mora with a cordless drill tho right? That being said i wouldn't argue the point that it doesn't cut any worse than a nils. It comes down to sharp blades and the easy efficient ability to turn the auger. where the nils has the offset handle comparing it to augers that don't is like comparing apples to oranges. many have said the finbore III with its offset handle is close or even to the nils but with the ability to purchase blades at most stores is a better option and costs a lot less also. Im inclined to agree as you can get over two hundred pretty easy in a nils with a spare head.

Actually, I have a gas powered auger now, but I still use my hand auger (Mora) with it's original handle often. It goes with me on every trip (as a back up) and if the ice isn't very thick I'll use it instead of the power auger. Sometimes I can drill a single hole with the Mora (by hand) faster than I can start and let the gas auger warm up. Sharp blades are important.

I got the 8" nils last year and now it won't cut. The head on the 8" seams to bend fairly easy. My fishing budy has the same problem. These were both new last year and haven't drilled more than 20 holes. They punch through so fast that it leaves an oblong narrow hole at the very bottem of the ice hole and trying to break that and clear the ice out of the whole I have bent mine twice and now I can't figure how to bend it back so it will cut. I need to send it in to get fixed. Where is the closest place that will fix it and sharpen it? Also: has anyone tried the small blade attachment I think called the power head? It is like a hole starter or pre-drill. I'm going to order a spare head with that. Around $90.00 though.

I have hear that you have to be real careful with them and also that its sometimes hard for a new user to get a perfect vertical hole, it takes practice and it sometimes makes it difficult to get that last bit of the hole done.
I wouldn't try to bend it back you may damage it more sent if off to frank and have him sharpen it and he can put it back to factory specks as long as it isn't bent too bad. the power augers have whats called a power point that helps start the hole but i have heard you don't really want that when using the hand crank.
