Destination Tiger Trout
#1
Wondering if I can get some advice from you guys there in Utah. I am in Idaho but I have a brother living in North Salt Lake. We are planning on making a trip in may to go fishing with him and our target is Tiger Trout. Anybody have suggestions on places to go and what flies work well for tiger. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Depends on the month I guess. You could hit up the uintas, the manti- la sals, currant creek res, scofield, nine mile, paliSades, birch creek, settlement canyon res, and Vernon res. I usually tie on a wooly bugger or an egg sucking leech and done well for tigers that way. Also hoppers, beetles and ants. I usually troll from my tube with the leech and bugger patterns though. But I've also done well for casting streamers wading.

I would second the Uintas. I was throwing royal wolfs on top and they seemed to enjoy those.

Are you boating, floating or walking the river?

Stillwater Schofield is a great place for tigers stripping zonkers or buggers is a great way to catch tigers add a chironomid dropper for the bows. As mentioned earlier Unitas are a great place but with the weather here in May you may get rained on Mirror Lake is the closest with out a hike. Ive done well at teapot and trial but you do have to hike out to it.

If your walking the river tigers are little harder to catch,
The Lower Weber River has Tigers there far from few but Ive managed to catch a them on Sculpin imitations, S-Dungeon, Circus peanut, Zoo Cougars even a Bead Head Hares ear [Wink]

there will be 4 of us all with pontoons with no motor or anything. all will be throwing flies and such. we thought about scofield but its another two hours of driving after 4.5 hrs of driving just to meet my brother. we were hoping to find something a little closer to north salt lake if possible. anything to the north?

I would try Vernon Reservoir. They have planted tigers in there and they get pretty big. You might be lucky to catch one of the rarer big browns that I've heard is in there. I trolled with a black egg sucking leech last year and had something big snap me off.

As Koch mentioned East Canyon is a good place Rockport has Tigers.

Theres Causey Res that might be closer to you Ive never caught a Tiger out of there only bows but there in there.

Awesome place to float no motorized boats so floaters get the the entire lake to themselves.

It depends on what month for sure. If you're looking to get into them soon, Nine Mile Res. is open & the fishing should start picking up soon & there are some NICE tiger's in there. My FAVORITE location to target tiger's is Duck Fork Res. up the Manti La Sal. (i'm sure i'll get in trouble for posting this, but WTH) You can throw them a nice big irrestistable on a nice sunny day & they'll hammer it. They're also not too picky about taking nymphs. Did I mention it's my favorite place? It's artificial only, and there are also some beautiful cutt's in there. You most likely won't be able to access it from the road for another 2 months. But until then, i'd hit Scofield (state record was just caught out of there), Huntington Res. & Nine Mile.

GOOD LUCK!!!! [Smile]

Rockport and East Canyon are the closest.

Next would be the Uintas i.e. Mirror Lake.

I wouldn't plan on the Uinitas even with the below average snow pack this winter up there. Road might be open that early but there will be limited if any open water unless it really warms up unusually quickly this spring. Plus the early open water isn't the best for tigers. Great time to target golden trout possible but they're all dinks.
