if you decide to try, be very careful. if you get caught between canyons in the wind your in for one wild ride. be sure to bring your PFD, flag/whistle, etc

Hell with rowing, you get caught in one of those Powell storms you are gonna need some serious surfing skills!

Couldn't that be said for any lake? In a tube or pontoon, you generally aren't that far from shore. And on bigger waters, hopefully with some external power.
I remember being at the Gorge in our 18'6" Rinker and we were airborne several times trying to get back to camp [signature]

Yes it could, but I have never seen storms come in as fast and powerful as some of the ones at Powell, they seem to come out of nowhere.

Been to Henry's? Might be shallow, but the waves get huge! Pyramid gets spur of the moment storms too.

Shallow water is scary in a storm, look at UL everyone drowns there. I have seen some big storms and waves at Bear Lake also. So I guess anywhere you go, be prepared to surf[laugh]

Ain't that the truth. I guess the size of Lake Powell is intimidating, but again in a pontoon or tube you would be fishing one little area. Hopefully the one that has tons of fish[]

thing about powell is, lets say you are putting around between Moki wall and hansen canyon, and the wind comes up fierce like it always does, there is no where shore wise to go, your stuck between the cliffs. you just cant go and hide out some where. Henrys is insane as well, I was caught in one that year i went up and the hubby and I were tlaking, but I was able to get near shore and off in plenty of time.
Sin, get the rampage, add the deck, add a gas motor, you will have a blast cruising from place to place FAST [signature]

Only problem with the Rampage and a gas motor (same as the Renegade which Cpierce has done) is if you put it on the back (bend) with the motor mount, and your seat will fill with water. Put a deck on and put it in the deck like a Zodiac or yours and Alan's boat you are sitting facing the motor and having to look over your shoulder.
I do know A guy that bought a frame for his so he could use a gas motor. Basically an X5. Now, how hard is it to get to one of those coves you talk of in a pontoon or float tube? If there is no take out, how do you put in? [signature]

it really depends on where you are on the lake. if you are between canyons near the walls, it would be almost impossible unless you had some form of power (motor) and even than its a good luck scenario. as for launching, you would have to out in at the ramp, or one of the very few drive in areas, once you have been certified decontaminated.
they way i am doing it next year is going to put in at the ramp or stanton creek after being inspected, and motor out to meet the house boat, pull my boat to what ever canyon we stay in and fish from there. the only freaky part would be crossing the main channel during a wind event, in which case i would do what i do at henrys.... put on a life jacket and ride the waves in [signature]

Had the toons down there this last weekend. Couldn't get my Prius into Farley's, which sucked, so we ended up at Battle Creek (just outside of Bull Frog). We got clobbered. Only caught a handful of fish over two full days. I was thinking that I would pay one of the bigger boats that was launching to haul us, our toons, etc. to a remote location, and just hope that they would come get us, but that seemed a little too risky. Next time I go down (hopefully soon) I might hit up Wayneswords.com and see if anyone would be willing to Taxi me.
