Henrys Fork Ashton Motel

Got back today from the salmonfly hatch on the HF. We stayed in Ashton at the Rankin Motel. Very nice, cheap clean little cabins. Much better than Island Park. Know what I mean? $$$$$$$$ Nice helpful people and I found some great fishing spots on the lower river. I'll be back at the Rankin. Bob

If you're fishing the upper river and want some "smaller" water, go to where the Warm River flows into the snake. That is our property all around there and there are some deep, awesome holes from the confluence to 300 yards past the bridge. I officially give you permission to walk the property (as if anyone would give you any crap, but the family is up there for the holiday and who knows -- tell them Dave Ballou said you could) and you'll thank me. If you're looking up stream from the confluence, you'll see some old beat down cabins on the left side. That is where an old logging business was, and there used to be a spillway/thing over there where they diverted water in there. If you go up past the bridge and follow the left side, you'll see where they dammed it up years ago. That little area around there is deep and full of monster fish. I've fished thousands of hours there and it is by far the best stretch on the river. Many 20+ browns and rainbows, and even a few brookies that creep down from Robinson Creek (just upstream a half mile -- that's another awesome river if you get bored -- just watch out for the land owners, they SUCK)

Of course, this is only if you get tired of the big snake and want some easier water. I wish I were there... so badly...

Sorry to cut in our you guys's conversation but I am hopefully headed up to the island park area on June 7th.......you guys wouldn't have any tips or advice for a beginner fly fisher would you?

Check with Jimmy's All Season Angler in IF. Also Henry's Fork Angler in Last Chance. Take your generic BWOs PMDs, small caddis dries and bead head nymphs.If you don't tie, go to Sportsmans and pick them up for $0.99. The fly shops in the Park will help you with any regional patterns you may need. These fish are tough and have seen it all. Some people come half way around the world to get their ass kicked by the Henrys Fork. We just have to go a couple hundred miles.Just enjoy being in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Lol I've had my butt kicked in ugly scenery so being some where gorgeous will be a nice change. I've never been up that way so early in the year. My family usually hits the Henry's lake area every July. I do appreciate the information on the flies.
