Just 5 of us fishing and I was saveing the my spot on the limit for a truely big cut but it didnt happen today we caught many over the slot in 3 different spots on the lake we also hooked up with a 19 inch TIGER 2 big sucker and one chub . The 4 fish we did keep was a 26 incher 2-24 inchers and a 23 incher fun day
i hope you can tell how big they are by the tail gate of the truck

it's nice that your having great success at the berry, but if you keep all the big fish you catch it may adversely affect the fishery.i make it a practice to never keep the big fish i catch ,(especially from the berry )where they are needed to eat large chubs.you might consider filling you limit with bows or smaller cuts, just sayin it's a free world though tight lines to ya .

Great job DD1US - nice looking fish - well within the regs for 1 fish each over the slot. CHEEERS!!!
I was also up today - took home 4 rainbows and 2 nice 16" kokanee for the smoker. The day was a good 30 fish days and tons of 12 to 14 rainbows. Boy they fight hard and sure look like a kokanee by the way they jump.
Sidenote: at the the cleaning station a fine oriental family was cleaning a cooler full of nice size chubs. They were scaling them and doing a full cleaning job for a couple or more dinners. So I Imagine they could get rid of a few of the chubs for the dinner table that the big cuts were supposed to chow on...

if you have any problems with the over harvest of fish maybe you should turn your attion to the pelicans i ran one off the river the other day that had so many fish in it he could not even get off the ground !!!!! it spit out 3 fish before it could even fly the biggest danger to the berry is'nt fisherman within the regs. its the stupid pelicans
i make one trip up and down a tributary every time i go to the berry not just to look at the fish in the streems but to run of the brids that can clean out the whole river in a day if you really cared you would run them off also
i was told just in the last week they did a count on the strawberry river and the was like 250 fish in it aroud 60 pelicans landed on the river and when they went out to run off the pelicans they only counted 50 or so fish the numbes are not exact but they are close
as far as big fish go today alone we let 9 of 10 over the slot if you think there isnt many big fish in the lake you are wrong there is a ton!!!!!

nice congrats on the kokes i dont get into many of them i target the big cuts mainly and if i wanted rainbows id stop at deer creek they are just clear better tasting fish and i dare say bigger most the time i know the bow are just comming back in the berry so the size will come but for now rainbows= deer creek
side note if i could talk the pelican into eating chubs i know where i can net about 100,000 in about ten minutes right now maybe that family could use a freeze full

I never said I had a problem with over harvest I just think it would be better for the fishery to leave the bigger ones for another day to grow bigger. keeping the fish you catch legally isn't a problem for me. and I have no right to tell what to do. it was just a suggestion. that being said the smaller fish eat just as well if not better than the big ones do.i just like to do my part and encourage others to do the same the regs for the berry clearly urge anglers to voluntarily release all cuts.i really didn't think it would change you mind but may influence others.please don't take my comments toward you as negative I didn't mean for them to be. P/S I enjoyed a very good weekend there myself.caught bows until my arms fell off.no big cuts but as you know their close to shore right now,i did however bring home 3 2.5 lbs kokes my self. I hope you continued success.[fishin]

there are suckers in almost every body of water thats not a tiny creek or a high alpine lake and there are even some in those lakes. ive seen a few tigers out of there but not a lot, its accidental stocking.

The suckers attempt to spawn in the Strawberry river, but the DWR tries to remove them because they eat cutthroat eggs. I think they are native to that drainage, but I could be wrong.
As for the Tiger Trout, I heard they were coming in through the ladders from Current Creek reservoir. There could be some browns in Strawberry as well, possibly some really BIG ones.

Lol that's funny that the DWR only cares about the native "pretty" fish. But that's interesting cause I would have never suspected that. I honestly didn't think they'd do very well in a cold lake like strawberry. I wonder how many brown trout/tigers there realistically are in strawberry. That's interesting about Current Creek cause I've never actually been to it and had no idea it's water comes into strawberry.

Suckers do well in cold water. There are also some really big ones in Jordanelle. I hooked one with a spinner that was easily 5 lbs or bigger, but it broke me off. They are native to much of the state, so they are well adapted to cold water.
It's not that the DWR doesn't care about suckers, but they have to protect the sport fishery.
Probably very few browns in Strawberry. Not worth targeting them, as it would be like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

i think i have only kept no more then 20 fish out of the berry this year in my at least 25 trips the and i have only had 2 or 3 trips with out multiple slot busters you only see a few that i catch and keep for example saturday 6 or 7 and one was over 24 and the only reason we kept these fish is my cousin comes down once a year to fish the berry with me. the 27 inch fish last week was my step moms first time ever going

Nice you try to explain, but you really don't have to. Even with the numbers you catch, you can't impact Strawberry.
No sweat Dog, do what you do. That is what they are there for. Besides, if we don't start getting water (better winters) we could all be catch and keeping.
However, as far as EATING them, might want to read this
Five cutthroat trout from Strawberry Reservoir were filleted and analyzed as a composite.
Mercury, n-hexadecane, eight pesticides, and one chemical from the dioxin/furan group were
detected (Table 1). Alpha-BHC levels in cutthroat trout were 0.0084 mg/kg, above the cancer
screening value of 0.0064 mg/kg.
