fishing in the wind
#1
fishing in the wind today lasted about an hour before I decided it was no use. Took my fly rod and my fly rod only, figured I would get in some wand time seen a ton of fish rising and swimming around, but I couldnt for the life of me get it out to them,. Fly fishing and wind doesnt mix to great I decided.

its doable, a lot of it depends on your setup, and you have to position yourself right in the wind. Learn to shoot your line and it will surprise you how far you can cast when it is windy.

wind is one of those things where it does matter if you are using higher end products. in my opinion. good line and a good rod are huge for me when fishing in the wind.

20mph gusts? The river was white capping. Ive fishes in wind before but not in.that fast of.wind. My set up isnt necessarily a cheap set up but deffinatly not a high dollar one. My line is Rio grand, wf5f and I had on a weighted streamer and it still got blown around.

Rio WF is great! out of all the lines ive tried it cuts through wind better than any other line on the market. yes 20+ mph gusts will be a challenge for any one to fish in. i was just stating that a good rod and line helps the cause.

The thing I hate even more than casting in the wind is trying to get a good drag free drift when high sticking. The wind just grabs your line and yanks it all around. Looking at the forecast, looks like I'll be fishing in the wind tomorrow too.

On a pontoon, it is AWESOME!

Or it can be. It can also be frustrating.
Shore fishing in my opinion, much easier. Cross wind or at your back pretty doable, casting into the wind, get down and side arm.

I agree higher end equipment, but for me it is LINE, not rod or reel. I prefer Shark Skin GPX which is 1/2 size larger.
But, RIO Windcutter is 1/2 size smaller for less wind resistance and it too cast like an arrow.

Make the wind work with you, not against you. Caught some of my biggest fish in 4 foot waves. I can only imagine what the fly is doing under the surface with those waves[Smile]

I was in my float tube when a freak gust of wind forces came upon me all of the sudden. I couldn't get back across the lake to my car and was blown into the willow trees. I had to make an emergency exit and hike back around the lake to my car all the time having the wind try to rip my tube from my near frostbitten hands...I feel ya, wind makes it more difficult.

Not every one can be the AMAZING flygoddess [angelic] . Maybe I just need to keep practicing all I know is it was sure frustrating when my weighted streamers bounced off the back of my head.

I am not saying it isn't frustrating, but like I tell my hubby, if we wait for that Perfect Day, we will never fish.
I get the birds nests and the four letter words too[Smile] Just the old, "make lemonade out of Lemons" thing.

I laid my line out in a heavy wind one day and all I remember is a bead headed prince coming back and hitting me between the eyes! Really, not just a fish story.

and that is why i am a huge advocate of always fishing with at the least glasses on. When we toss big stuff there is a reason we nickname it chuckin n duckin.

As far as line I am partial to RIO Gold myself. With the coloring of it you can get an idea of exactly what you need to have out to load your rod up. I can double haul that stuff and shoot it farther than any other line I have thrown to this point. With the wind, like FG said you need to usually side arm it more I also tend to roll cast a lot more when the breeze is blowing as it keeps the line fairly low.

Well, now you need to get a 7w or 8w for the windy days. That will help for sure.

I was given some at one of the IF shows. They had it strung up on a Z. While I was impressed as heck with the Sage, the Gold fell short. Maybe because of the Fast action. Anyway, I never use it. Maybe I will have to give it another try.
Speaking of Sage. They had a line at Sierra Trading post for $39.00. It is 230 grain WF. What a fabulous bass/carp line.

The Gold performs really well on TFO's fast action rods I haven't tried throwing it on any other setups ( 4 different TFO' models all 5 or 6 wts). If I was to string it up on a couple of the fiberglass rods I have I am guessing I would hate it. The way that line is setup it just performs really well for tossing big stuff on a fast action rod in the wind. I haven't thrown it much for smaller drys since when I start tossing small stuff I usually pull out the 2 or 3 wt.
