Little fish in Alaska

I got to do a little fishing in Alaska last week. As luck would have it I lucked into catching this one thought you guys would enjoy. Food was excellent, fishing was excellent, unbelievable weather, a top notch camp.

We had a great trip to B.C. last week with limits of Kings, Coho, Halibut and Lingcod. We also got some rockfish like Yellow-eye.
Looking forward to fishing with you this winter.

That is funny you said you saw it on your face book the guide from the other boat took the picture and put it on his face book. We must be in the same circle of friends. Small world with the internet around huh?

Oh yeah you must be hooking up with the boys down at tire factory on the crappie. I went in to get my tires rotated and I talk fish with them all the time and that is all they talked about was some guy catching crappie down there. It's a small world again. LOL

Oh yeah about having a lot of meat to eat I shared it with my 14 co-workers. Nice guy aren't I?! everyone took home 75 pounds of fresh caught fish, Halibut, Ling Cod and yellow eye, black bass or rock bass , all kinds of ocean bass, oh yeah and I almost forgot Salmon pinks and silver. It was almost like fishing in a hatchery for the Salmon. We filled limits everyday.

Just a little note on the big fish 16 oz. lead head jig with a 12 inch single tail grub, with a little cut bait makes the catch rate go way up. So I got him in 275 feet of water on the bottom of course he ran back to the bottom once and made 2 other runs that were 50 to 100 feet of line out. When they tell ya he felt like a barn yard door I reeled him in 3 to 5 inches at a time. It took an hour and 15 minutes. Of course you can't net a bad boy like that after we harpooned him twice with a 2 1/2 foot bouy and a 3 1/2 foot bouy. Took 3 of them guys to get him in the boat after he laid up on the surface. What a RUSH......

Words can't describe the beauty in Alaska. Ya have to see it first hand to believe it. Btw the trip was a gift from my employer. what a nice company I work for.

just curious what the possession limit is? How many daily limits do you get to bring home??

You are allowed 2 possession limits on your person in AK. But once the fish is processed it is no longer considered a portion of your possession limit.

So whole fish is treated very different then fillets. But if you leave the fish semi whole, i.e. the head and guts removed and then vaccum sealed it is considered processed. []

Does the guiding service, lodge, camp, etc. offer "processing" for their customers?


Sure sounds like a "loop hole" to enable anglers to take home more than a possession limit.


I know that commercial fishing for halibut has a much larger impact than sport fishing. But sportfishing possession limits are set for a reason. Finding ways to enable people to take home more than a possession limit just seems wrong to me. That doesn't mean that I wouldn't do it granted the opportunity. But I'd probably feel a bit guilty. Oh well. Just my take.

Yes the lodge or guide service does offer the processing. No it is not a "loop hole" because the state set it up that way and is very aware that people are taking fish, sometimes lots of fish, home to eat down south.

The reason for the possession limit on whole fish is so that they don't get spoiled. People don't usually freeze a whole fish it is usually fresh on ice. So the idea is that you will not waste fish by leaving them whole to spoil. The guts and blood of a fish (or any animal for that matter) cause meat break down and spoilage faster then anything else.

Commercial halibut and king salmon guys gut their fish and put them on ice and will keep them that way for up to 5 days. A whole fish that is not gutted will rot in that time, even on ice. But a gutted fish on ice will stay relatively fresh for up to 2 weeks, though your grading at the processing plant will go down fast.

Trust me the state knows about the fillet and freeze process and are VERY happy that tourists come up and spend their money to take home 50 - 100 pounds of fish.

The cost per pound (or put differently) revenue per pound for the tourist caught fish is on average 50 times, that of the commercially caught fish.

Or expressed mathematically Silver Salmon caught by a commercial fisherman goes for $2.00 per pound at the processing plant. That same silver salmon caught by a sportsfisherman with all expenses factored in cost them about $100 per pound if they are at a fully guided and provided lodge. If at a do it yourself lodge, the cost is probably closer to $30 per pound.
