Cutler Switch 8-24-13
#1
Snuck out early today, hit the water at sunrise air temp 58 degrees F, water temp 71.4 degrees F... Tried my minnows again and nailed a nice cookie cutter kitty about 8:00 and then I got something different with lots of violent head shakes and then airborn it went, landed a nice smallie on a minnow, that sort of surprised me... Went back in and nailed another nice cookie cutter kitty and from then on the season changed and it was bass after bass after bass... Large and small mouth, but they were pretty small.. The big one of the day was 13", had a couple of those and a few 12" and then down from that.. Ended up with 12 bass today, 2 Channel cats and one nice slab of a crappie, it was only 11" long, but it was so fat I was really impressed with it... Anyway I lost five or six other bass and two other crappie cause they can't hang on when they go in the air... Silly critters... Fun day I really enjoyed it, had to quit at 10:15 so I didn't get in too much trouble with the Mrs... I think the bass and crappie are in a great big school that was moving and I just happened to cross their path today, because they were jumping all over around me, and that really doesn't hardly ever happen... Nice to finally be in the right spot... Kept one smallie today because he swallowed a minnow too deep and didn't make it, let the rest keep swimming for another day... Later J

I stopped by cutler last week. Saw a dead fish at benson but nothing else otherwise. One of these days I will attempt to put in some time there to find the fish.

Cutler is a fickle puddle, it gave me my handle. I've been skunked on Cutler more than any other spot I've fished. I fish it more than all other spots because its only blocks from my home but its tough to have a good day on it. Yesterday was my best bass day in years numbers wise. If I can catch two or three I'm usually happy but this time I was in the right spot for a change. I've fished this spot several times this summer and not caught anything but the fish were moving through yesterday, hope they stick around but they usually don't. Later J

Thanks, that is one thing that is fun, you usually get several species at Cutler, usually one of each for a total of two fish... But I lucked into the good ones except for walleye this trip... I guess the bluegill and sunfish are okay too, but I haven't ever caught any of them out of this area... Seems like the eyes are scarce this year, I still haven't caught one yet, but I've been fishing other areas so that might be part of the problem... Sure can't find the bigger cats anymore, but I quit looking when I'm catching fish... Thanks for the input.... J

I have gained a new appreciation for Cutler this year as well, this is the first year I've been able to catch cat fish trolling and I've been able to catch many of the varieties that I catch in Willard here at home so it's saved me a bunch in gas... But it's not helping me catch a wiper by fishing at home all summer.. Plus I bought a season park pass and have only used it once at Hyrum so I'm not going to get my money out of that one... Oh well guess it pays for nicer facilities... Later J

Thanks, I think it was my first one this year and it really had some shoulders on it. One of the thicker ones I ever remember catching. I wish I could figure crappie out, I love to catch them, but can't ever get consistent at it. Catch ya later. J
. Can you have more than your limit in possession if you are going to release them?
To answer that is No.. You'll get a ticket if DNR searches you.

Yup - almost always count on Mudcats and Carp - if nothing else!
But I'd concur - diverse fishery, but there's a lot of water out there! Nice to find a few nooks and crannies where our finny-friends like to frequent.

You painting me green again! So you pinning those minnows on a jig head? Or pitching curly tails as well?

I'd better get on it while I can, before they drain it down!

Yote the minnows were just on a circle hook with a sinker to get it to the bottom, but once I seen the smallies were present I switched to the curly tail jigs and they worked well. I agree you need to try them before its too late. We might be in our last month before they drain it. Been real slow this summer for me until the last two trips I've finally got into the panfish. But if its like usual next trip will be a bust. Catch ya later J
