Thought I'd share what I caught with my cousin while in Newport Beach. Caught these shorefishing. Was a different experience fishing on the beach. Surfers in the water, People tanning on the beach, Dogs running around, People swimming and excercising on the beach. This was one of the best fishing trips I had ever been on, had doubles, but I didn't look at the stingray he landed because I was reeling in my 59 inch Leopard Shark at the same time. All together we hooked 4, landed 3 Leopards 51.5, 52, 59 inches and a sting ray. Lost 1 Leopard I horsed in when we were running into the ocean to grab the shark by the tail to drag ashore, but nonetheless it was an excellent vacation and an extraordinary evening fishing (or should I say catching).

Wow - some brutes right there, nice fish too! haha
So what're ya throwing for shark? Hunks of cut-bait maybe? Do you steak those guys up, or what? Are they a toothy bunch?
Looks like some serious fun. Bet they're good fighters, sure are colorful!
That's a fun area for sure.

Very Nice! Since the jetty is on your right, I'm guessing you were on that small beach that runs parallel to East Shore Avenue?

Not sure. Is East Shore by Dog Beach? If so then yes I think if you keep driving you would be ar Chica Bolsa? There were lots of surfers.

Sorry cant help too much there. I'll try though (none of it was my gear, I brought my pole but we were hucking 4 oz weights with cut bait so my medium heavy rod wasnt going to hold up) . I dont know if they were anchovies, mackerel or sardines they were fairly large and seemed bluish. The biggest factor was the tide, my cousin said we had a 2 hour window on Thursday to catch them (some app on his phone). We caught 2 in the first 30 minutes, Not sure if I mentioned this but at 1 point we had doubles (his was a sting ray) I didnt see it much because I was focusing on landing my 59 incher. I lost another from horsing it in because it ran so long at first I was convinced I was going to run out of line. The was tons of line on the reels it was 30 to 40 pound braid and we had to run out in the ocean during the wave retreating to cast as far as we could.
I know its not much but I hope it helps it was pretty easy all together we were there for about 2.5 hours. I quit because I was too tired to reel another one in and the fishing was slowing down (actually from this trip this is the first time I feel like I can call it catching instead of fishing but that catching was slowing)
