Another sturgeon report
#1
My cousin and I just returned from fishing for sturgeon.

The weather was unbelievably calm, which is always a pleasant surprise. Although I wouldn't have minded it being at least 10 degrees cooler. It was so calm that for much of the time I just used the i-Pilot to anchor up.

Only had one ugly experience this trip and it wasn't on the water. I decided to "Go exploring" on one trip back to our motel and I took a different road back from the ramp (others had taken this road, so I wasn't just heading across country). After traveling a short distance I immediately realized the error of my choice, but it was too late then and I could only try to go forward. I sunk one of the rear tires in the "moon dust" which also caused the trailer spare to drag on the ground. For those who have never experienced Idaho Moon Dust, you can take my word that stuff has got to be one of the worst soils known to man. Fortunately, a couple guys from Ogden (at least one if not both of them said they are fellow workers with one of our forum members) came to our rescue. Unfortunately, neither of us had a tow rope or a tow chain. Decided that the next best choice was my expensive anchor rope. The rope worked great, except that none of us knew how to tie a knot that wouldn't tighten itself while towing a Suburban. Got one end untied, but had to cut the other end lose. Could have been much worse, only lost a couple feet of rope.

Now to the catching report. We caught 14 sturgeon, a cazillion (whatever that is) smallmouth bass, in a couple hours going after them, a few perch, one small channel cat, one 7 pound flathead cat (correction -- it was also a channel cat)and a few squaw fish.

Caught more small sturgeon (smallest 27 inches) this trip than usual, which is an indication that they are still reproducing, which is great news. My newbie cousin caught the two largest at only 6' long. We had two sturgeon break off, due to equipment failure, that appeared to be much larger. The largest smallmouth bass were 15 inches long.

We had to move a couple times because huge schools of perch moved in, and it was impossible to try to catch a sturgeon, because the perch would immediately strip all of our bait. First time this has happened to me up there. We also got pestered by squaw fish stealing our bait.

Great trip and it was a special experience catching up with my cousin after far-too-many years.

The bowline knot is amazing for it's ability to be untied even after being subjected to pulling out a stuck vehicle.

Nice report Kent, sounds like it was a lot of fun other than getting stuck. Ira told me, when we went out fishing on Fri, that Craig was going to be up there this weekend. I guess he was the one that helped you, from what I heard he was even up there fishing the same area as you the last time, you were up there.

I agree the bowline is a great knot that usually comes undone fairly easily , i trim trees and have had 1000lb+tree branches fall down with this knot and i can still untie it! Im glad you had fun and im jelus! I need to give sturgon fishing a try one of these days!!!

Yep, the same two guys. I gave them some ideas and some cut rubber bands and cut pipe cleaners. Hopefully, I was able to help get them into more sturgeon.

It's Karma, they are there because of you and the many trips and reports you have made. I have no doubt they read all your post about fishing up there. So you helped them out more than you know, I guess it was time that they returned the favor[Wink].

Hi Kent,
Glad you had a nice trip. Sounds like the weather was a lot better this trip. Did you stay at the hotel or rough it??
Last year we caught quite a few Chiselmouth fish (a non-game fish... see Idaho proclamation) and used them for bait.
Where and when did you get your invasive species sticker?? I see I can buy one on line but it takes at least a week for the sticker to arrive. It would be nice if they just sold them at Walmart so you could buy them at the same time you buy your fishing license....I guess that makes it too easy.
I maybe heading up there in a couple of weeks....any tips??

Stayed in the hotel again. Felt really good to take a hot shower and sleep in an air conditioned room, in a bed, each night.

I purchased it Online. Have purchased it before at that state park right before Bruneau.

You need to go fishing for them with me and you will no longer be jealous (except on all of the trips when you don't go).

After looking at the booklet I am not sure if we caught Northern squawfish or or chiselmouths. I should have tried them for bait. I have tried squawfish fish for bait before with zero success.

Awww but can it be done with fly gear? I am really interested in this.

Yes for a smaller sturgeon but I have no idea what kind of fly one would use.

Spent the night there last night. Jim told us about you guys catching 14. Never had Gertrude on that stretch. Squawfish suck for bait, stick with trout. Caught lots of 2 lb smallmouth, once you get past the perch. Tournaments next 3 weekends, then it's sturgeon time.

This is where the wife and I always throw out the anchor and eat lunch, always good for a limit of smallmouth. Have saw lots of sturgeon roll, just never get that far downstream with Gertrude. Maybe this fall, curt you game?

I'd be interested but part of the month of Oct I'll be hunting. If that is the month you want to give it a try, I'll look the dates I won't be hunting and let you know with a PM.

Didn't look quite like a channel cat, so I figured it was a flathead. Picture is in original post.
