Frog lures / topwater

I've always wanted to catch something on a frog lure for some reason, are there any places around salt lake or Utah valley where you can? So best just the best places for topwater fishing in general? I've been going to deer creek but not sure where else to try

No reason you shouldn't be able to at deer creek. The main problem you'll have with the frogs is it will generally take a bigger fish to eat the whole frog so you can sink those top hooks in. Those little smallies might not be big enough to get to those upward facing hooks most frog baits have.

Try pineview there are some decent sized bass in there. Lots of bass waters other places as well.

I agree with both posters. You'd need a big smallmouth to be able to hook it with a frog. Anywhere there is largemouth is where I'd go for frogs. Topwaters would be better for an all around lure to get both species. Frogs/topwaters are usually best right as the sun is coming up and/or setting. You can catch them other times as well, but you'll have better luck at those times. Frog/topwater fishing is a blast!!

Go to stansbury there are toads all over the shore and some big bass in there that eat them []

River2sea makes a smaller frog that I like to use around here since large bass aren't as common as they are down south. It has really nice sharp hooks and I usually have a pretty good hook up rate with it. Habitat like what you find at Pelican is your typical place to toss a frog. Any place where you can find that would be a good place to throw a frog.

The areas to use frogs aren't always the best places to use topwaters in general though. Most any water with bass can have great bites with poppers, walking baits, prop baits and the like. Low light periods with relatively calm water are your best bet for topwater action. I fish them along rocky banks or over submerged weedbeds when conditions are right. During the spring, when the fish are in shallow and are aggressive, you can have good topwater action all day sometimes.

Fished a pretty good smallmouth lake down here in the southern end of the state yesterday and the smaller fish didn't seem to have all that much trouble getting a frog in their mouths. The bigger models really had no problems with it!

I fished a river from a bridge (no traffic) more than once and noticed on the retrieve or just keeping it in the river it would skip like a frog, so I bought frog lures for the lure to match the action. It seems like it would work, but haven't tried with my frog lures yet.

Try anywhere that there are frogs.

Go at sunset and listen. If there are frogs you will hear them croaking. As was mentioned, sun set and sun rise. Frogs are food for birds as well as fish, so they tend to hang out in heavy cover in the daytime. Frog swimming in the open is easy to spot from above.

Think of where you have seen heavy weeds like cattails or fragmities along the shore.

I've had a couple big bass blow up on my Iobee frog by Jackall at utah lake. I've also caught bass at salem pond on it as well.

If you want a guaranteed Largemouth on a frog, Sand Hollow is hands down the best Bass fishery in the state. Especially right now.
