Bear lake Mac fishing!
#1
Well guys, I've never tried to put pics on here before so I hope this works, but here goes.
I took my little fishing buddies out on Friday evening to hopefully catch a biggun or two and it went better than I hoped for. We started by making a trek down to the marina to fish off the dikes, but there was a small army of deer hunters killing time fishing before the hunt got underway the following morning. It was still early enough to do a "plan B" so I quickly hooked up the boat and ran for the boat ramp at 1st point. Had about an hour left before dark after I got launched and rigged up.
After having to come back to the dock for an emergency(kids drank too much soda if you get my drift), I started trolling north of the ramp in 20' of water just dragging a rainbow rapala and a meps cyclops. We made it about 300 yards and "fish on"! It was a pain to steer the boat, tend lines and deal with the inevitable kid tangles, but by the time dark hit we had four landed. All in 15-20' of water just trolling in the top of the water column. Each of my two daughters caught two. They kept one each(28"&32") and turned loose the other two. These were their biggest fish ever and they haven't quit grinning yet!
Now, just in case someone is upset about keeping them, we usually keep about 6 per year this size to put in bottles. Tastes just like canned salmon! Besides, I didn't have the heart to make them throw their best fish back.
Anyway, fun as always and the fish are VERY fat compared to years past.

Nice job! Love the one fishing in a dress! Just like my granddaughter. Never apologize for keeping some fish to eat. C&R is great, but too much is not good for the fishery either.

The one has her nightgown on, but my other little "free spirit" will not fish our hunt unless she's wearing a skirt or dress! Pic was taken the following morn.
I usually don't apologize for keeping fish, but some people feel special about lakers. I don't keep too many, but they are on my list of fish to eat every year. They grill up and bottle up superbly! The bigger ones are my first choice to bottle because of the large, flaky texture of the meat. Just don't cook them inside or marriage counciling will be neededSmile I hate buying from the supermarket when its so much better right out of the water. I've got six nieces to take out today possibly, so I'm not sure if I should report how that goes when it's all said and doneWink
Bear lake is a great place to fish once a person figures it out. The fish are plentiful and generally bigger than most people are used to. I do hope that people take no more than what they will reasonably use and turn back the rest for others, but by all means, eat some of these critters! They are some of the best that utah has to offer.

About 10- years ago I caught a 30 lb mac,and was told by the captain that they wanted to get some out of the lake (flaming gorge)so I took it home and fillet it,and put it on the bbq, well that went great[:/]Took me 15 minutes to put the fire out[sly]

Ya, a 30# laker would put out enough oil to heat your house! 15#ers aren't quite so oily. I personally use 5 pounders and under for the grill, and I use up to 15 pounders for canning. Anything bigger goes back, too much oil for my taste.

They were super happy Travis! I took em last night to the marina finally right before bed time and they both caught one each. Big ones!! I couldn't get a picture of Lindsey's fish because she wore it out pretty good getting it in, so I just shook it free in the water so it wouldn't be too stressed, but Katie's bit about two feet out and she got it in pretty quickly so I had her slide it up for a quick pic before putting it back. They were the same size and the girls were squealing with joy!
