Mackey, Lava Lake, Carey Lake, and Little Wood Reports
#1
December 21st for many it is the shortest day of the year, for my son and I we still managed to check and fish (well almost) four bodies of water.

Mackey: Good news --bad news kokes are everywhere and are easy to catch, however, they are five to six inches. Cisco have twice the meat! The ice is a crazy 20 -24 inches, you will probably need an extension in a month. I have iced fished Mackey for over a decade on this date, and I have never seen the ice this thick this early. OK they are not easy to catch unless you know what you are doing. I recommend two pound test; if you hook into a giant trout just test your drag for an hour[Wink] A flasher helps big time, both electronic and a spoon on your line. Also find 30 feet of water and you should be good. You are not going to get a meal, but you could have a blast catching them for hours. Smallest kokes I have ever caught, and I have been fishing for a while. The North wind was brutal and with the new snow was in my face all morning. I am very cold tolerant; however, I was done by 11:30 AM. One of the few days I wish I brought my shelter.

Lava Lake: Mud hole, very little water. Probably common information for some.

Carey Lake: Ice is four inches, we had one bite in thirty minutes. Knew Little Wood would be more enjoyable.

Little Wood Res.: You may catch a 5-6 inch brookie or a 20 inch bow. We iced a lot of fish in a couple of hours. Ice is 8 inches, fish near shore in 15 foot of water, remember Little Wood is deep, we had very few hits at 30 feet of water. All colors worked, fish could be found throughout the column. Once again the Vex pays for itself.

I don't believe I am hot spotting, due to the fact of the large amount of small kokes and if your willing to pay $50 for gas for six inch kokes great for the Idaho economy.

May all of you have great fishing this Holiday Season!

Thanks Don--I was hoping you would chime in. You know kokes better than anyone any idea why these would be so small. I know every third year there are very few kokes in Mackey, however, I thought this year they should have been around a standard 9-10 inch range. Perhaps there is a plankton shortage, and therefore, stunted growth? It seems no matter how long I fish I will always realize how little I know[Smile]

I think they lost most of the crop of Kokes three years ago. The fish you are seeing will be the 2 year olds this year and mature next year. Because of the way the fish school a virus can pretty much wipe out a whole year of fish. It's nice to know we have a bumper crop coming up next year however.
The same thing happened at Ririe with the crop 4 years ago so Ice fishing was off dramatically last year. The predatory fish in Ririe haven't helped things either.

Is Lava Lake the little puddle off the hiway near Carey Lake?
What kind of fish would you find in it?

Yes, It is listed at about 80 acres and is on the North side of the road. It was stalked this year and I have heard that you can even catch a 20 inch bow out of there. I have seen water in it previous winters, just not this one.

Curt,

Yes we iced four or five, largest was 12''; a very pretty fish I might say. With the ground blizzard we really only fished with two rods. If you find 30 feet of water set up for kokes and then start running a trout line towards the shore; I have been successful for trout this way. Also the kokes just kept hitting our baits, so it would be an a aggressive "bully" trout that would come in and finally take it.

Great report thanks for Mackay report and hope to be up there towards the first couple weeks in January. I might need a extension by then however even with the small fish it looks fun. We might have to hit little wood on the way back. Thanks again.

Fished Mackay monday and today. Caught mostly small koks. However we did catch two nice ones. Also caught some nice trout. Limited out in less than two hours. Brought the fish home and bottled them since most were so small. Yum yum!!!
