Wow!!!! Days like today are exactly why I fish days like today. When the weather is bad the fishing can be good. TOTALLY unexpected catch of the day.
I went to target crappie, settled for some trout and sun fish. But this guy had some shoulders!!! Took me three minutes to ice him.
Just thought I'd share.

Nice winter bass. I will be there tomorrow targeting crappie from 3-1000pm. The late afternoon night bite has been good for me out there.

Nice bass and photos! How was the rest of the catch?
Is it worth sending a newbie and his son out to pursue? I have a friend looking for a "go to" place for this Sunday to introduce his son to icefishing.
Any help would be appreciated. Location, depth, lure, etc.

Lots of small trout and sun fish. There was a fellow there who caught 4 LMB, small ones. Can be fun for the kids.

This is the place I take a lot of kids and first timers. 1 it is close and 2 the trout and sunfish are always biting. I have had 5 trips this year and non-stop action. it will only get better. I will add a few pics of my catching there.

Great looking bass! Any luck with walleyes there? I heard that place had some real nice sized ones but I've only been there twice with no action.

I have been twice looking for crappie and could never find them.- caught tons of dinky trout and a 10 inch Large Mouth

There arnt as many crappie as in years past. As for the walleye I have personally never seen nor have heard bout anyone catching any. That is what I was hoping for when I first fished it. There are tons of tiny slime balls to be caught but most of the warm water species are in the dink range now days. Few decent bass here and again but all the good sized fish have vanished over the years. Im hoping the new WIA will reduce the catch and keep rate but I doubt it. My 2 cents. Yes Im going all (bassrods) on this place...but I put new batteries in my scale. ha...Im only joking bassrods

I would love to be there with you. I hear the night bite for crappie can be intense. I've noticed the schools of crappie haven't been showing up, for me, the last few trips there. Last winter they would come through every 30 minutes or so. My flasher would light up with fish from 15' to the bottom. The bite would come next, slow but steady, smaller ones then a few big ones.
I'm guessing with the lower water levels the spawn may not have been that great.
This is one of last years haul.

The last walleye I caught out of Holmes was over 5 years ago. I haven't seen any pulled out since then.
I caught one monster 14" slab a couple years back when I spotted him hiding in a huge hollow log but haven't found many big crappie since.
There are some nice LMB in there that will give your ice fishing pole a serious workout. I threw everything I had at them all summer and couldn't convince them to come up for a visit. They swam all around my float tube to tease me though.

I hit Holmes Creek Res Saturday morning. The bite was fair for 8-10 inch rainbows early but about 10:30am all the fish in the reservoir parked directly under me. The flasher was showing a solid wall of fish from 6' down all the way to the bottom (25ft).
I had trouble getting my glow jig down to the bottom because of all the trout and bluegill that would hit the wax worm on the drop.
I kept four of the bigger trout and one nice crappie.
A friend landed this bass as well.
Nothing huge on this trip but a great morning on a local water.

Gosh if that lake wasn't so far away from my place I'd hit it a few times just for ice bassing.

ice was a good 8-10 inches a week ago. may be a little slush on top with warmer weather this week.

Was on there today ice still good and no slush. Now there was slush once I drilled some holes but you were not walking around in it like on other lakes I have been on. Just some trout today no crappie or any other species.

My 10 year old girl just informed me she wants to catch her first fish through the ice. I have not been to Holmes yet this winter and figured it would be the perfect place for her to try. I am sure she doesnt care what type of fish it is. I was on my way to Scofield before she mentioned this but Holmes is in my backyard.
If anyone is willing to give some helpful tips we would gladly take them!
