Montpelier res
#1
We took the kids to Montpelier Res today. Tango's first ice fishing trip! It was a small city but that didn't matter, the weather was perfect. Its nice to see everyone help with lowering the perch population. We are starting to see some perch that are a little bit bigger from last year, its not hard to get over a hundred. The edges are soft in places and the slush monster has started in some spots; however, its still very good ice and easy access.

Best bait is a tiny jig that resembles a perch and a perch eyeball or a mealworm.

That looked like a great family outing. There is nothing like taking the kids to a place they can catch a bucket load of fish to get them hooked on fishing. By the looks of the underwater camera shot, I might could even catch some there. [Image: happy.gif] Thanks for the report!

Im not sure if that temp is accurate or not, its on a Marcum camera. You wont get any big fish but you will catch fish so it is great for little kids. Its one of the places that I don't mind telling info on around here.

Looks like fun for you all... what an outstanding day. Thanks for the report and the pics. I gotta get the kids down there for a day!

As far as the temp is concerned, it is probably not that far off... I believe water is most dense at 39 deg. and will be that on the bottom of the lake.

Looks like fun times with the kids! Good job!

I also noticed your temperature reading, and I also think that's probably pretty accurate. Water is most dense at 4 degrees Celsius (about 39 Fahrenheit; pretty close to the reading on your screen). If it gets colder (or warmer) than that it becomes less dense. So in the wintertime the coldest water (less than 4 C) will be right under the ice because it's less dense than the heavier 4 C water below it.
This is a handy feature of water because most substances keep getting more and more dense as they get colder. If water did that too, the entire lake would freeze, ice fishing would be impossible, and we would have nothing to do in the wintertime! [Smile]

I found this page that explains a little more if you're interested: http://faculty.gvsu.edu/videticp/stratification.htm

Nice job. Are people still leaving all their perch on the ice? We were up there on New Years and my 8 year old daughter asked me why people left all their perch on the ice. I told her it was because they were poor sportsmen.

Being raised in the Bear Lake Area I am so glad many people like yourself are willing to get kids out and fish! It is awesome that so many are getting into 100 perch days. My son and I are contemplating a weekend trip to Bear Lake and the Preston areas to fish it hard!

Great Report,

I love your camera shots . I just googled it to that place . 2 hours one way , that would be about 80 bucks round trip .

Thanks guys. The cisco are running at Bear Lake as well, I believe the cisco disco is Saturday at cisco beach. There is a polar bear plunge at the west side marina that day as well. If you wanted to know more there is some info on the Utah board.

great post, always good to get the kids out. Im trying to get a good day of fishing where they can keep their attention and catch fish on their own. I went to rock port in Utah last weekend with no luck. I heard about this from a buddy, making a trip this weekend to check it out. any tips would be appreciated.
p.s. does any one know why there isnt any limit on perch ?

It doesn't matter where you go on Montpelier to catch perch. Most of the perch hang out just out from the boat ramp to the south on the west side in 14 ft of water. You will get into kokes there too......
