My boys are on spring break this week and they are begging me to take them catfishing. I have never had a lot of success on the Bear or at Benson Marina. I am hoping someone can point me to a good spot or two. My son is my fishing buddy and I am about to loose him for two years as he heads out on his mission. I would love to get him into a few nice catfish before he leaves. Any suggestions?

water temp is still a bit low and this snow storm didnt help much but.. cats are as hungry as they get this time of year... They are already going shallow though in search of food... try shrimp or worms in 1-5ft of water. benson and cutler are both full of cats right now... getting them to bite will be the trick...
good luck !

+1 on what STH sed. You banking or boating? Chilly in any case. But clear skies and some sun - by afternoon they might be seeking those shallows out.
You know where I took you that one time. They are there - or have been. More of the same as you head north. But I get the feeling they are still in more of a staging phase, so might be skirting the best spawn spots, staking a claim, or laying out their wanted territory. And snapping on the feedbag as they do so.
Seems like they are still scarfing the gooey green stuff. Always wondered how that would work wrapped around a hook. But shrimp have been my friends. You secret scent can't hurt either.
So far I've got more attention laying bait on the bottom than under a float. But I still like my bouncing bobbers.

CV cats haven't been my friend this year yet, so I hit Hyrum, it's slow but a night crawler with a sinker on the bottom with a marshmellow to float it about 18" off seemed to work for troutski's over the weekend... Just an option that seemed to be more active for me... Good luck and wish your son the same on the mission... Later J

Congrats! My son is also leaving soon for his Mission. I'm planning on taking him fishing as often as we can get away. He's got some nice catfish in the past...hope we can get him into some more.

For me, slow current next to still water has been the ticket this spring. Right off the bridge at benson marina in the evening and into the dark with whole night crawlers and shrimp fishing right in the current should pay off. If I ha one choice to make right now it would be that for bank tangling.

Sorry - late response. I'd be curious to know where the "locks" are too. Is that the dam, or down by Corrine?
Here's one that didn't work so well:

I've never done much good for anything than Mudcats at Benson bridge. But I like the current notion.
Might consider Cache Junction. Off that bridge, well - under it. Seen some wicked Crappie up there too.
We've fished along by the boat launch. Lava caught one of his biggest carp ever until it broke off, uh - I mean freed itself by it's own skill and fortitude! Not the Knot!
But he did land a dandy of a catfish there once. It's often pretty windy, but if it's blowing towards shore, it's bringing goodies with it.
