New to Idaho
#1
Hey all, i am currently living in Southern California, but am moving to Idaho for a year of boarding school. The school i am going to be staying at is located in Sagle, right next to lake Pend Orielle!

I was wondering what type of fish i should be targeting from shore on lake Pend Orielle, also some techniques would be well appreciated. I've fished for trout all over the Sierras and in Southern California as well. Also, are there any other good locations within a 1 hour drive?

Thanks!

Welcome to the board. The north Idaho guys don't have a strong presence here, so I don't know how much info you'll get. Sorry.

I would hope you would be targeting Kamloop! Strong, HUGE trout. Kodiak should pop on this one!

Well, the fish Pend Oreille is famous for.....kamploops trout and mackinaws.....pretty much need a boat and down riggers. However, you can fish for perch in the Duncan Slough area, and also fish for smallmouth bass in the rocky shores in the Hope area. When you get there, you will need to talk to the locals about small lake and river fishing. There are lots of options. Check out the Coeur d' Alene paper on Thursdays for a great fishing report. Click on news, and then outdoors. Welcome to Idaho, and good luck fishing. Mike

^^^ ya what he said! That's good advice.

I grew up and went to grad school a couple hours south of there. I've never really bothered to go fishing all the way up there simply because there was no need to drive that far to find fish. I imagine you'll find something similar to be the case up there.

Basically I would ask around at the local shops and check the reports in the paper mentioned above, and you'll find that within a short drive of you, you should have plenty of opportunities to catch trout, pike, bass (large and smallmouth), bluegill, crappie, perch, catfish... etc. etc.

What I'm saying is it's a good place to live if you like being outside! Have fun, and let us know how you do! Oh, and welcome to the forum!

Should have mentioned that Sagle is within a mile or two of Shepherd Lake, which has bass, trout, bass, panfish, and had/has tiger muskie. Perhaps the boarding school has a bike, which would make the trip an easy one. Better yet, see if someone on the staff is a fisherman, and maybe they will introduce you to some of the better local spots. Let us know how you do, will you? Welcome to Idaho! Hope you find the school a good experience. Mike

Biking is a good idea. Learn to be safe. Idaho will teach you to be safe. Always, have a rod and reel.
