Consistant Cattin' Cutler

A day of home-stuff, gardening, and digging out the boat (!) led to a late afternoon run to the marsh. Pup had been trying to climb in the car all day, so some fresh gas, and a quick pitch in Blacksmith - we packed up, headed out.

Had prepped up a new fly-setup, ready for some carp action - but the frenzy was not to be found. Calm day - they must have been "loving in the wind" that other day. Pitched and stripped for the heck of it. But no love on the biscuit.

But not 5 minutes into the first bait cast - line was peeling, and the fight was on. A burley 25" channel gave me a run for my money while I tried to get the fly rod ready. Glad my pup was watching my rod, and the holder was well set, or I'd have been saying goodbye to an ugly schtick! After a measure and photo-op for the contest, reset, and again - couldn't get to the other rigging, before game was underfoot again! Another two footer gave me play.

Thought I'd be in for a mess of action, but things quieted down, and I got the chair out, and set up proper-like for a longer haul.

I did manage a break to walk the shore, toss a biscuit, but the carp were not there to be loving it, so I returned to my setups, and set in. Seemed like I'd arrived at the end of the afternoon party. But didn't mean there weren't more dances on my card.

Pup gets SO excited when the action starts up - need to video her launching and leaping at my net when a cat is on board - funny stuff that! She tried to french kiss a kitty, and got tail-slapped for her affront!

Got pestered by a number of mudcats along the way, but still a thrill for some. After the sun-set, pulled out a glow stick, and realized my bell rig is ALSO a glow-in the dark. Nice. No late night monsters, and decided not to stay overnight. But the pup had a good venture, pop had some fun tugs, and we both went home happy.

Aarrggghhhh! I gotta get over there this week! You guys are killing me!

Care to share what they were biting on and what depth?
Glad to see it settling into the summer pattern, they look plenty fat too!

No super secret baits, some carp strips to start - and they worked, so I kep feeding 'em. Tossed some shrimp to give 'em a variety. Worms never made it out of the cooler.
Depth is - well, shallow. Don't think it hardly gets any different in this area. Part of why I choose it.

The wind was pretty nil (for a rare change) but there were sawarms of what appeared to be skeeters, though not very aggressive. Maybe something else on the hatch.

I will say - the music was incredible - as dusk sets in the birds sure fire up a song. Quite the conversationalists. Oh and the frogs too. Driving home with the windows down - passing by occasional flooded fields it was almost piercing.

Nice shot of your dog lickin his chops. Looks like he is ready for a snack.

Kinda what I figured for the bait. Good to know. I just netted a couple dozen suckers out of bear lake to use for cut bait (and a few carp), so I'll be all set when I get over there to fish. The suckers are spawning here right now and there are thousands for the easy picking.
I'll have to do the shallow thing I guess too. For some reason I can't convince my brain to not steer me toward deeper water. Someday I'll learn to steer clear of my instincts!

Yote, me and the boys hit it Saturday evening and my boy Casey caught a nice cat pushing about 8 lbs. We picked up 2 more one about 20" and the other right at 24". My boys are hooked on that catfishing now... Thanks for the help in locating some spots.

Well "he" was a "she" - though she does love to take a walk on the wild side! (do dat doot). Shoulda seen her go go go. I'd call her a real "B" - but might get edited!

You seen that dog in Eddie Murphy's Dr Doolittle - vertical jumps for the ball (throw the ball, throw the ball). That's her when I've got a fish in the net, it's hilarious. I just dread the idea of her catching a spine, or finding my hook. But so far - it's all good.

Ya know - by the calendar - I figured they'd be on the spawn, but the Logan is running SO high and mighty now compared to last year. Guess I need to do some more exploring.
I did find they really liked sucker chunks last year, seemed to work much better than carp strips have for me. Even tried to pitch a whole big head, hoping for that river monster.
These strips were pretty fresh and bloody, that must help.

Seen a post on FB about a canal leading away from BL, and some good carp/cat action there.

Sweet - 8 lbs is a good one! No doubt - they'll strip some line, and if they don't wanna quit, you better not horse 'em. Made that mistake enough.
Ben had a good philosophy that helped me - "I just let 'em do what they want until they're ready". Just hate when "what they want" includes logs, anchor ropes, an inevitably - my second line.

Glad you and your crew got into them. Sounds like you picked a good spot, but - there's a lot of those around now, especially if you think SHALLOW!
