High Uintas ice starting to come off
#1
Took a drive up Mirror Lake Highway this afternoon to take a look not actually expecting to fish any lake. First turn off I headed for Alexander and as expected I hit a 3 foot drift half way in. Next try Murdock Basin. Didn't even make it to that big parking lot area with the Creek going by. Snow and mud also a couple miles in. Next was a lake further up that tends to ice off early with easy access. Found 50 yards of open shore that extended out maybe 30ft. Fished for probable 90 minutes but only managed 2 bites and that was with 2 rods. Didn't hook either. I didn't expect to get a rod out so can't complain. Had my 2 dogs including the one that turns 16 next month so I didn't drag the old girl through feet of snow from the highway to look at Trial. Trial typically will start to come off about a week later than the one I fished. It looked like plenty of people were walking in so who knows maybe it's coming off as well.
The Provo River main channel was totally blown out until about 20 miles up from Kamas.

I'll bet most, if not all the ice was off Alexander though.
About 10 years ago it would have been worth the walk in for it's nice brook trout, but lately it's not even worth it when you can drive to it. Skinny little 12" fish. Hopefully it comes back someday.

No, Alexander had about 20ft of open water on the south facing side. I managed one 12" inch brookie as you described. Pictures later in the week.

Also, thanks for all of you advice Riverdog.

Did that spot work out on the river? I have a little achilles tendonitis otherwise I would have left my older dog at home and hiked into Alexander. Saw a couple cars parked below the snow and I assumed they were checking out Alexander. Fishing picks up once things open up just a bit more on many of these lakes.
Interesting the lake I fished 700 ft higher in elevation sounds like it had more open water.

ah the Uintas, will be nice to head up there this summer for a nice day trip. Nice to know how the snow pack is doing. When I made the trip to Rock Springs
friday, looking south there is still a lot of snow up there.
