Took my son for a quick evening of smallie fishing on Jordanelle Tuesday July 8th out of the Hailstone Marina. We started off along the southern shore just east of the dam and caught our fish in 8 to 20 feet of water vertically jigging 3 inch senkos on a dropshot rig. Coolers included pearl, white, and watermelon in various flake configurations. We had our best luck where the waves were washing up to the shore, apparently stacking up bait fish. The larger fish were a little deeper, and took the baits slowly, but fought well when hooked. We caught 38 in about 2 hours of fishing. I was pleased that the average size was 12-13 inches, with 7 or 8 over 16 inches. The fish were not as fat as in years past, but were still very healthy. I also landed 5 chunk perch that made their way to my dinner table (11-12 inchers) and only one chub. Water temp seems to be perfect to have some fun playing around with these fish.

Rapid fire catching and releasing of smallmouth is my son's favorite activity. He is very independent about how he fished the water, the colors he wants to use, and what water he thinks will hold the bigger fish. Capped off by sleeping on the water, it makes for some great father son bonding time. FYI, nearly every fish caught was regurgitating 2 inch baby perch. Water is probably at its peak, but definitely higher than last year. Sadly, it is still below most of the best cover.

Nice!
Thank you for the report.
I went up last sat for the last two hours of daylight and got bashed around pretty good by wakeboard boats. I sure wish the State Parks would come out and do something with violators of the proximity law. I would also love to see something done about the boats blaring loud music. I am so sick of listening to others music at 100 decibals. Fishing/boating used to be a peaceful sport.
Anyways, I did not do as well as you but wanted to thank you and your son for prompting me to go.
