Crow Hunting
#1
So, I'm always excited to get out and do some hunting. I've been trying to learn more about hunting crows now that there is a season hear in Utah. The question I have is are we supposed to eat them? It sounds like in some other states (and maybe it's still against their law too) they just let them lay. I read on wildlife.utah.gov that they are full of diseases. If they have good healthy meat I'm all for it, but it seems weird to eat crow....
But considering there is a bag limit I'd assume that you are supposed to eat them.

Just like any other "game" animal you are expected to eat what you shoot. Otherwise it is just waste. I would imagine the people hunting crows are the same ones hunting coots and stomping them into the mud. but that's just my thought.

Coot taste just like duck and I will shoot them if they come into the decoys.

I agree. I've shot a few coots and cooked every one. They really aren't bad. But its a different kind of meat. They have really small breasts for their size and more meat on their legs. Because they don't fly as much as most ducks. I have never shot a limit of coots and never will or want to. But the people who kill them because it is legal to only to end up leaving them in the field or leaving them in a dumpster behind the wall Mart they bought the shells they shot and the coors they drank aren't ethical hunters.II'm sure a few people will down a crow this year that actually plan on eating their harvest. But plenty of crows AND ravens will end up as fertilizer or at the dump. Both illegal, unethical, and give hunters in general a bad name.

I don't shoot any of those things. But none of those are game animals. The mindless killing of anything you don't plan to use is idiotic. Unless they are a nuisance to your land or livestock there is no argument as to why kill those animals. Other than you find it enjoyable. If thats what you enjoy one can also throw rocks at pigeons downtown. At least those can be eaten if you got one. Ever had squab?

Rockchucks eat farmers crops and cause a lot of damage . Ground squirrels damage irrigation ditches and cause a lot of damage . Coyotes kill young deer and Elk and have attacked joggers on the greenbelt . If you want to eat crow be my guest.

I have ate crow more times than I wish to remember but have never tried cooking it first and trying it that way. Did cook a jack rabbit up once. Boiling it first. Boy did the house stink. Actually can't remember if it hit the skillet or oven afterwards. Don't think I would try cooking coots or crows, maybe a pigeon. Not much into blasting things for the sake of blasting them but I wouldn't have an issue taking a particularly troublesome crow or two down, squirrels, if......needed.

Curt69... what you say is true. I know those animals can cause damage and injury. I'm not debating that. I understand the fact that if they are a nuisance by all means kill them. But to do it just because you can is immoral. Shooting crows just because you can and not using them is illegal. Thats the point I'm trying to make. It is exactly the same as dropping a 2 point opening day and leaving it because you saw a bigger buck the week before. Its poaching. Killing a nuisance animal and just killing crows because you can are two different things. I'm not going to shoot a crow. For the simple fact I wont eat it.

I disagree with about everything you believe in . I can hunt wolves and cougers . They are game animals and you don't have to eat them . Some animals cause more damage than they are worth . If you swat a misquote or house fly , do you eat it . Get real .

You are taking what I'm saying to the extreme. I need to get real? I hunt for food. Yeah its fun to be in the field and shoot stuff. And there is no better place to be with my dad and brother. But for me the reward is eating something that doesn't come from a store. Isn't packed full of chemicals and hormones. Eating something that up until I took its life, lived naturally, never saw a cage. Its not about showing off my new bear skin rug. Or this years trophy over the mantel. While years past trophies are collecting dust in the basement. The only point you have brought is nuisance animals. And I agree with you on that. So as far as you disagreeing with everything I believe. We can agree to disagree. At least.

Kill all the wolves and mtn lions! because they're game animals! Its not their fault we are running out of room and encroaching on their home. By all means kill a nuisance animal. But not just because you can.
