East Canyon Thursday
#1
Wanted to get in a trip before the craziness begins tomorrow. The lake has dropped another ten feet since I was there three weeks ago. Ramp is down to a lane and a half, despite them bulldozing away a lot of dirt from the sides.

The water, however, was delightful. Surface temp 65° in the morning. Light winds all day. I slow-trolled crankbaits all day from my kayak and both the smallies and 'bows loved a little bluegill imitator that runs about eight feet deep 50' back on braid. Lost count of the 8" smallies and kept two 'bows for my wife, who loves 'em.

EC may not be the largest reservoir, but it's big enough when you're propelled by your legs, I assure you. I'm bushed.

Oh, and I guessed right: almost all of the power dudes are apparently saving up for the weekend. Only saw three or four skiers all day, and they were all respectful of the anglers. Miracles never cease, eh?

Thanks for the post. I have that place on my mind lately. So how was the wind?

The wind started out at perhaps 8 mph right down the Dixie Creek arm, then went near calm until it picked up again in midafternoon, again from the northeast. It was strongest whenever I was pedaling into it - naturally!

Thanks for posting your report Rocky, sounds like you got a good workout along with catching some fish. No crappie?

There are crappie in East Canyon? That might explain some of the suspended "clouds" I saw on the FF. And maybe a few of the tug-and-gone strikes I had...But no, I didn't catch any.

My intention was to bring home a few "pounder" smallies for the table. But all I got were "ouncers".

Incidentally, once again, the deep pit near the damn looked to be absolutely paved with fish, all tight to the bottom in 116' of water. Don't know what they might be, but even if you could hook one, cranking it up through that much pressure change might well kill them.

Oh yea, they have been in there at least 15 year, maybe as long as 20 year but we sure don't get many members posting about them. There have been a few members that target them and report of catching them up to 12" but in general most folks don't catch them often.
After Bearlakefishguy recently reports catching cutts in Bear lake at 100 to 160' of water, I'm guessing 116' would not be a big problem for most trout. I bet they are some big browns[Smile].

Curt, my friend, I must have double-clutched and hit two keys with one finger, because as I sure as hell (pun intended) know the difference between a dam and a damn.
