My wife has let me go fishing this Saturday when we visit family in Ogden. I won't be able to take my float tube, so I'm going to go to some of the ponds around town. I am going to be fly fishing for panfish, so where would my best bet be?

21st Pond is one (just west of Wall Ave) and you might also consider Pineview Reservoir.
If you can go a bit farther south, Bountiful Pond just off the Legacy Highway is another great choice.

Glassman pond is a good one for panfish, there is little shore access but there are four fishing piers on the North side of the pond that might give you some room for back casting. It is right by MckayDee Hospital.

I appreciate all the info....out of curiosity, if I were to target crappie which of those ponds would be best? I have yet to catch one!

As far as I know, neither pond has crappie, mainly bluegill and bass but they also have cats and trout. Crappie will be tough to catch this time of the year from shore but the two places close to Ogden that have crappie are Willard and Pineview.

would bluegills be similar as well (go out deep in fall) or can they still be caught fro the shore?

I just got back from Glassman pond a few minutes ago. I only caught 5 bluegill and 1 bass but I was only there for an hour. The morning and evening are the best times to fish but I catch them in the middle of the day as well. Bluegill seem to hang near the shore all summer and early Fall, I could even see them just a few feet off the shore. If you go use the smallest hook or jig you have and tip it with a piece of worm, a ft or two under a bobber is what works for me.

The only reason I didn't mention Glassman was the OP's comment about fly fishing. Glassman is almost completely tree-ringed. They do allow tubes and toons (unlike 21st Street, where no boats at all can be ued) so a tuber could get enough room for a backcast.

Wiperhunter2,
What did you catch your bass on? if you don't mind.
Just wondering. I've targeted bass at two community ponds without success (Oquirrh and Bountiful).
thanks,

Same thing as the gills, a small jig head and a piece of worm. Of course these are small bass but I usually pick one up on every trip. I think every pond will be different on what works.

I plan on using floating line and very small nymphs. I have done this in several ponds when I grew up and did well. I guess we'll see. I know that Glassman's pond is only a few minutes from my in laws house. I will probably go there and one more place. Would Holmes Creek be a good place for a fly angler? Meaning would I have a hard time with a back cast?

If you fish on one of the 4 piers you might have enough room at Glassman, there is one more area that is open but most areas are tight. As far as Holmes Creek is concerned, someone else will need to chime in about it but I think it has a lot of trees around it. Try Andy Adams pond it is closer than Holmes Creek and a lot more open.

A great cast to learn when surrounded by brush and trees is the roll cast. Gets rid of the back cast and is very effective.

Fly fish is only good for pan fish the end. I've went to a few ponds yesterday after work and only caught bg the end. Next time dnr will stock ponds will be in the fall time.

The community ponds are currently being stocked with small rainbow trout.
You might want to target them, if you go to a community pond.
If you want to target Crappie, you will want to go to Pine View or Willard Bay.
I doubt that you will have very good success though. This is a slow time for Crappie.
If you want to go a little farther to the North, Mantua could offer some good Bluegill action. A float tube would be good but you could still fish the shoreline.

I have thought a bit about Mantua, it's not too far from Ogden.....I haven't caught a bluegill yet this year and need to do so!

Holmes creek is a fun little place with a fly rod but you need to fish off of the dam since the rest of the shoreline is covered in trees.
