Late East Canyon Report / RFI Lost Creek & Strawberry
#1
Fished East Canyon last Sunday and had steady action and several fish trolling minnows behind downriggers at 35-45 feet in the mid - North end of the lake. The bite died around noon so we moved down to the dam and marked many fish at 20-80 feet -- no takers.

For tomorrow, I am trying to decide between Lost Creek and Strawberry. Has anyone put a boat in at the Lost Creek boat landing lately (i.e. is it still usable). I hate to do a years worth of damage to the trailer banging up the decrepit excuse for a road between I-84 and Lost Creek if I can't get the boat in the water[bobWink].

For Strawberry, has the moss bloom died down at all? That seems to have killed the fishing for me the past few trips.

Hope the report helps and appreciate any info.

Thanks for the report on East. May head up there in the next couple days.

Just a few days ago there were a few guys talking about the road conditions at L.C. I'll look back and try to find the link for you. They had a lot of info to share.

From the sounds of it it is still rough but improved. Not completely sure though. Either way wish you the best of luck!

Found it!

So it has been a few days, thirteen to be exact, but road conditions shouldn't change all that much! *wish fish were like that... *

I'd suggest shooting the guys a couple PM's if this doesn't cover what you need. Each of them have a ton of knowledge I'm sure will point you in the right direction. Good luck!

(In case the link doesn't work it's from the 7th of September by deafman. Currently mid way down the fourth page of posts. )

Thanks -- great info. I think I'll take it slow and fish LC and give the Berry a few more weeks.

Well that is interesting, I've never heard of someone trolling with minnow for trout. How fast were you trolling and how do you rig your minnows? I've actually considered trying this at Bear lake and use something like a JP rig.

RBE, as you'll see from my "virgin" post, three of us fished the Berry Saturday. There was flocculated algae everywhere. I couldn't tell how far down it went because it itself limited vision.

Interestingly, there seemed to be millions of inch-long minnows - or something - a couple of feet below the surface. With polarized glasses, and sometimes naked eyes, we could see constant flashes at that depth. Moss doesn't flash, so there had to be something down there causing all those glints. We never saw anything but the glints, so we're just assuming they were minnows.

I hook them right through the eye and always rig a small brightly colored stinger hook. I would say 50% or more of my hookups on the stinger -- really cuts down on short strike misses.

I can't explain it, but I've found that on some Utah lakes that is a killer rig. On others, not so much.

Thanks for the info, I'll have to give it a try, by the way, how fast were you trolling when you are pulling a minnow like this?
Did you make it up tho Lost creek?
Bduck and I made it up to East canyon yesterday, fishing was slow for us and we only landed a dozen or so bows in the 12 to 16" inch range but it was a nice morning on the lake and great company, thanks again Roger. There was a surprising number of fisherman on the lake for a mid week outing. Starting to see a few clumps of algae on the surface, so it won't be long before the fishing improves.

Your company is always welcome Curt, it was an enjoyable day. [cool] It may have been a little slow however those were some feisty bows. A good 1 1/2lb range put up an excellent fight. The way a couple of them hit I thought the rods were coming out of the holders. The lake is definitely turning with patches of moss floating around should see an eruption of moss plume soon. The recent rains also have made for stained water. With the storm coming in this weekend it should start cooling things down and fishing should start improving.
BTW, that hot breakfast sandwich we had sure made the morning. [Image: happy.gif]

Your post totally explains why white tube jigs up high in the algae are working so well right now! I was up there Monday and Wednesday and the tube jig up high was on fire. Fish are working the water close to the surface getting minnows. I am sure that is the answer.
Thanks for your post.

Yea, that hot breakfast sandwich was awesome, that is the first time I've seen a grill used on a boat but it worked out well. Thanks again my friend.

[#484848]I sometimes troll or even cast a gulp minnow behind a long No. 2 hook with a prop on the front.[/#484848]
[#484848]It gives the minnow a slow roll that all the salmon experts like to use. It also works for large trout, as in Fontenelle.[/#484848]
