Since it had been 6 weeks since we last chased crappie, Alvin and I decided to give it a go today after work. We hit our favorite secret bluff spot and they were there. I think they are on this spot year around unless they are spawning. Alvin had problems catching fish today even though we were using the same lead, bait and line, I beat him 3 to 1 at least. We caught most of our fish off this first bluff spot and did catch 4 off another bluff hole and got 4 off a dock. We had 34 crappie in all, around 20 keepers and I took 17 home for mom (the 10" squeaker keepers went back). We also got 2 bluegill, a 4" smallie emoLaugh , and a 6" spot emoScratch .
All fish came on chartuse baits with 1/32 oz lead on 4 lb fluorocarbon line. Fish were down around 10-15 feet, even on the dock. 34 crappie in 3 hours after work is not bad in my book.
I noticed two things tonight. Shad are EVERYWHERE!!!! And so are the mosquitos!!! They ate us up all evening. I guess they are coming out of the grass but they are BAD right now out there.
I took a pic of the side scan where most of our fish came from tonight. You can see the ball of crappie hanging over a tree that is wedged on the bluff. Pretty cool.
