Cutler Count Down 10-13-14
#1
Old Columbus was a fisherman ya know and he was out looking for a great fishing hole the day he made that discovery. So in honor of him I went fishing at Cutler seems they are going to drain it next week. It was just after 7:30 before I got launched and a line in the water. Water temp was down to 54 deg and air temp was a balmy 29 deg. At launch. Did the float/ drift thing again dragging a carp minnow on my bait rod and pitching plastics on the other. Tried the tandem rig a little with no luck, but my 3" grub found a 14" SMB, then an 11" SMB around 8-8:15 then it shut off till 10:00 when I found a nice 15" SMB which was a nice fish, a few minutes later a 26" channel cat about pulled my pole in, it was on the bait rod. And I should have quit then. Fished until 1:00 and never hooked another fish, had a couple bumps, but nothing solid to hook. Fun day out, a little chilly, but beautiful. Sure seems tougher to get fish lately. I'm afraid my skunk day will return soon. Later J

Those are some nice looking fish. I'd planned on chasing smallies myself yesterday, but spent the whole day waiting for a roofer that never came [frown]

Hey Greg, sorry about your roofer. Been getting the same treatment from people wanting to buy my hay. I hate it when people tell you a time and then don't show up.

Fish were pretty nice quality just few in quantity this trip. Great fights I had a lot of fun there. Glad they flushed those smallies downstream from Oneida, its fun to have something new and different. I still haven't found my fall walleye, may not get one this year. Well hope you get a chance to get your smallie fix. Later J

I may have to come up there one day to chase smallies. Those seem pretty decent sized play things.

I guess I can't complain, the roofer has really hooked us up. He's hardly charged us for anything except materials at cost. He's teaching me how to do things myself and lets me borrow tools. He was going to come by my place after finishing a job in Tremonton and show me how to put the metal on my roof. He didn't know when he'd be done, so I stuck around the house, but the job must have taken longer than expected. Oh well, in the mean time I took out some trees and cut them into firewood and got some homework done, so it wasn't a total loss, just not as fun as smallies and walleye.

Hopefully you'll get into some fall eyes. This cool weather should have them getting active. I got into some eyes and smallies a few weeks ago. I posted a report over on the Idaho board about it. I also had a killer day last week catching largemouth and you can read about it over there if you feel so inclined. It was one of those magical days where things were really on.

Well you have a week or so before the water will get too low to access them easy. Don't know why but fall seems to be the only time of year I can find them, but they are fun. Sure not as many this year as there was the last two years but some are nice fish. Had one on that I guessed at 18" it was a lot bigger fish than this one, but I screwed up and let it get slack as it launched into the air and shook its head at me. Fun times, good luck if you come. Thanks Curt, they are fair fish better than the trout I was catching at Hyrum, but not as good as the cats and wiper at Willard. But they are close for me so the fuel cost of the trip is minimal so I like it. Thanks for the well wish. J

Hey Greg, I have been following your posts in Idaho and enjoyed them. I didn't comment but did read them. Glad you had a good day with your roofing even if it didn't involve a fishing pole. Hope you get time again soon to get some tugs before the hard water hits. Probably down to six weeks or so left. Depending on the year. Catch ya next time. J

Nice one Jeff, I need to try it this Saturday . I'll be at your folks place at 1 pm doing a pheasant hunt and if we get our birds quick enough I may have time to try the fishing before they drain it.

Good report

Sounds fun Mike hope you can have a great day between the activities. I'm thinking about trying your first suggestion for the deer hunt opener so I likely will be around your home stomping grounds. I don't really care to shoot one, but I'd love to see the nephews get a shot so they can tell stories at school. Look for a PM. Later J

Great! If you come up Friday afternoon or evening, swing by the fire station if you see my F-150 command truck parked there and I'll be more than happy to go show you the right place and fill you in on the tactics. If I'm not there you can still get hold of me, my phone number is on the door of the station. Good luck!

Very nice Jeff. I've been so torn. Between salsa, peppers, and all the rest.... then didn't go last Sat (beautiful day!) and Sun was wet and wonderful. Been juggling a fall run to Hyrum, maybe a late Porcupine adventure, or a River run. I gotta get out for at LEAST one more float. Just have to.
The times I have hit the river haven't shared with me as past years. You'd seen them, my friday runs hitting those bass and crappie. But this year's attempt have been pretty sparse. Maybe the wind, the sun, clouds, time of day, too many mosquitoes, not enough cows and carp. Who knows.

Two years back - it was 14-17 inchers like clockwork, and I'm SURE the biggest smallies broke me off. Bigger braid, fatter footballs - I was ready. Alas. And just haven't hit into the crappie the way I love to. But - I haven't given it the time. Need to get better a quick "grab the dog and turn around" game. Too easy to get busy with a garden picking, and next thing I know - sun is going down.

I do have a free weekend coming, so hopefully. A Porky post-spawn adventure does temp. But I do truly want to see what Bear/Cutler might offer before the drawdown begins. Will the river go down too? Not sure where/how they control that. Maybe it'd be a good time to run down low, below. There's some BIG ass cats down lower. Might be worth the venture to try something new (always a bit intimidating!)

Some beautiful fish there mate! I should send you some garden salsa to slather them with, - if you kept any that is. Seen some bass, trout, perch reports from Hyrum that do encourage...

Later. Glad you're getting out.

Fall walleye? Could it be?

Thanks Mike, depending on when I get off the river I may make it back in time to look you up. Is your station in Garden City or Laketown? Thanks again for the help. J

Hey John, I've noticed the same thing numbers wise this fall. I'm not catching a third of what I did in the past, but there are a lot more boats fishing it this year and so I think with pressure the catch dwindles. I'm not sure what the deal is with crappie either I only seem to be able to catch one every once in a while. I see a cloud of them every so often on the graph but they don't ever want to play much. Don't know what to recommend for your fishing dilemma. My fishing log is telling me I need to try trout. Every fall about this time I get really big number trout days like 40 fish days. We nailed them at Chesterfield one year on the deer hunt opener and they were up to 22" fish. But the hope of a walleye and low expense has kept me home so far this fall. Guess I'm trying trout tomorrow so I'll try to report how that turns out. Going to be a different type fishing for me so will need to go school and see what I learn.

I appreciate the salsa offer, but I've been releasing everything, but I did keep that last wiper and a couple kitties from Willard that I haven't ate yet. May have to have a taco night. Good luck where ever you decide to go and I'll try to keep an update on. Reservoir levels. Oh I think you ask about the river during the drawdown. Last year it dropped about 5' so a lot of it was only a couple feet deep, but the holes were still deeper. I figured the holes would be great fishing, but it wasn't; the fish really shutdown after the drop and I never did catch much after until about May before it finally picked up again for me. Hope it will be better this time, but I don't expect it to be. Anyway got to get to work. Later J
