Bear Lake from shore help
#1
So im planning on heading up to bear lake this weekend to try to catch a few lake trout. My biggest concern is that ill be fishing from shore but i have been told that this is the best time to try because of the spawn. Its nearly a 3 hour drive for me and any information that would make my trip more fruitful would be greatly appreciated!

If you don't have cisco you might as well fish for whitefish from shore you could try spoons or rapalas off cisco beach early AM. If you have a small boat or tube you could longline with cisco or mabie anchovies. Good luck

The spawn is a tricky time to catch lakers. You can see them cruising the shoreline at night doing their thing, but they aren't really in a feeding mode. They will hit out of aggression from time to time so it can be alright fishing at times. This activity usually starts around 9 pm and picks up steam as the night progresses. It comes in waves of activity, sometimes they are swimming all over and other times there is an hour or more between pods of fish coming in. The way I fish is to use a glow in the dark tube jig on a 3/4 ounce head. Fish it by lobbing it out quite a ways and slowly retrieving it while giving it small pops and twitches. If the fish are up next to shore really heavy then cast ahead of them and wiggle it as you slowly bring it past them, sometimes they will dart out and smack it. You have to be quick on the hook set when they hit it because they spit it back out just as quick.

They aren't running hard yet, just a few coming in as of two nights ago, but that can change fairly quick. This weekend could be an ok time for them. They also hit big blue and silver spinners and spoons and can be caught right at sunup for about an hour and about an hour before sundown. I've also heard, but haven't tried, fishing around 1 pm and a few are supposedly hitting at that time.

Have fun with it and be persistent, it can be a long while between bites. It can be quite easy at times to inadvertently snag one or two. Please don't intentionally snag any of them and please immediately turn loose those that you do accidentally snag (if you do). There are a few of us that live here that have taken it upon ourselves to watch the goings on there and promptly report those that are intentionally snagging fish and those that keep snagged fish, intentional or not. That being said, it's not a snag fest here as some have said, I'm there all the time when it really going good and watching it pretty heavy and the vast majority are perfectly ethical about the fishing, but I'm sure a few do it wrong. Most folks are doing what they should be doing and having an enjoyable time doing absolutely nothing wrong.

Please report those that you see violating the law, this is a unique opportunity that the DWR is allowing us to have and I would hate for people to screw up a good thing. Off my soapbox now, good luck!
