Fishing is expected to be good for the re-opening of allowable retention of sturgeon from the lower Columbia and Willamette Rivers. Anglers will be allowed to take one fish in the slot limit from Buoy 10 to Bonneville Dam starting January 1st, 2004. sturgeon have been staging in anticipation of the upcoming smelt run, so smelt and sand shrimp are expected to be top baits. A determination regarding retention during the remainder New Year will be made on January 7th.

Winter steelhead fishing slowed with the cold snap, but anglers adjusting their techniques continue to take fresh, bright fish from the streams and rivers on the North coast. In addition to steelhead, the Wilson River continues to produce the occasional chrome bright December chinook. The Nehalem, Wilson, Trask, Nestucca, Three Rivers and Alsea are all reported as producing various levels of winter steelhead success.

The Clackamas River is providing steady but spotty action for winter steelhead with the Sandy River broodstock run just starting. Most of the fish in the North Santiam are natives. A few steelhead have been taken by plunkers at Meldrum Bar where the discussion of who will catch the first spring chinook has been heard on occasion.

Ling cod fishing will re-open on January 1st, 2004. Over-harvesting by California skiff fishermen caused the closure of this fishery on November 21st, 2003, at a time when Oregon ling populations were reported to be strong and improving.

Crabbing is fair to good at Netarts, Wichester Bay and in the Columbia estuary.

No trout stocking is scheduled this week, but the 2004 planting schedule has not yet been made available.

Be sure to be a part of the best catch of the season! Bob Rees will be conducting a seminar on the 2004 run forecasts for Oregon fisheries AND THE NEWS IS GREAT!!! This run forecast seminar will be conducted at Fisherman's Marine and Outdoor at the Delta Park Store on January 13th SO MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW ! ! ! ! ! ! The seminar at the Oregon City location has been cancelled so the only presentation on this year's run forecast is at the Delta Park store despite what you read in the Oregonian.
