Strawberry marina 1/6/15 report
#1
I hit strawberry from 830 am until 2 pm. I landed 7 fish and lost 2 at the hole. 1 was a rainbow and the rest were cutts. The Cutts averaged 18 to 19 inches except for the 14 incher that came home for the smoker along with the rainbow. The ice was 5 inches. be careful around the lodge. there was a large spot of open water where the ice looks like it came apart. 6 out of the 7 fish bit off white paddle bugs and night crawlers.

I hope the weather holds. It was 36 degrees when i left. And there was a large area opened up by the lodge. The game warden said it opened up on Sunday. The ice was making a lot of noise so hopefully thats a good sign.

It should be pointed out that the "opening" by the lodge is from a large pressure ridge that broke open on Sunday and goes from just East of the marina ramp and extends snake like out towards the narrows area, possibly all the way across. If you access the ice from the marina ramp and try to head East you will be required to cross the pressure ridge. While my opinion is the ice will be fine temp wise in the near future, this pressure ridge could cause travel problems for much of the ice season. If you are fishing in the marina area and want to head East, I would recommend that you access the ice from the trail to the right of the marina store and avoid the ramp. If you are fishing to the West of the marina, then going down the ramp is no problem.

Thanks for the clarification . I forgot to mention it was a pressure ridge. I attempted to post a picture of it from my phone but it didnt want to load.

I was up there when that split open. It was like an earthquake and everybody was laughing because it made you jump.

I fished Chicken Creek East this morning from sun-up to about 1:30pm.
The ice was 7inches at the most in some areas, but for the most part it was right on 4 inches.
Fishing was okay. A dozen Cutts....but not one of them after 11:30am.

It should stay pretty close to freezing up there during the day, and quite a bit below freezing at night. I imagine the berry should be fine for a while.

Ha...sorry I don't mean to laugh, but it was not even close to freezing up there during the day yesterday or today. I was up there yesterday and today and the sun was shining and it was nice and warm both days and The slush monster was out big time today. That opening at the end of the pressure Ridge is now a pond so just try to stay away from that. And do not go up there unless you have complete waterproof boots and are willing to fight your way around in the slosh

On Sunday there were a couple huts that went for the long haul. They made it there and back. However, that pressure ridge wasn't there when I walked to a different spot earlier in the day. I was able to get back to my truck a different way but if that ridge had cut me off I think I'd be scared to cross it. There may not be any new ice but the ice that is there will be solid on top...for now. Be careful.

When you get back, let us know how thick the ice is up there today and if it is starting to rot.

Thanks!!

Ice is solid safe for walking. Average thickness of 5-6, some areas too thick to see. Than down around the middle and spots that get a lot of sun through the morning ice is more like 3-4. Still no really thin ice. Fish are shallow around prime time then move deep. Try 60 feet of water after 12 pm. Got this one right off the bottom and pulled him up 53 feet so get deep!

Not sure how thick it was at the marina, but I fished in a cove just north of there today and it was a solid 5" no slush, however the fishing was terrible. Earned my first skunk of the season.
