Deer Creek quickie
#1
Had a couple hours to myself today. So I made the quick drive up to deer creek. Got to the water by four p.m. Fished near the dam on the west side. Soaked a couple flavors of powerbait for a bit because I was tired after working, just wanted to relax by the water. Didn't end up with a bite until I reeled in my bait to call it . A very healthy 20" Brown came up, and bit the salmon peach powerbait, said a quick hello then back in for a swim (My first brown outta deer creek). Figuring moving baits worked once I switched to a gold Kastmaster to see if I could get them to work twice. Sure enough within 3 casts a smaller, beautifully colored, hook-jawed male rainbow wanted to play. He went back to swim as well. Left the water by 5:30 just after the sun went down.

Sorry for no photos, I was too chicken to break out the phone for any because I'd already tried to fall and trip into the water a couple times without the excitement of a fish on. The path was muddy and slick, and the rocks to get to the water weren't as stable as they looked.

If anyone is wondering, I didn't see any ice on the water at all.

That reminds me of a very similar trip I had to DC many years ago. I saw the pictures of the browns I caught in my man cave while cleaning up the other day (not really cleaning up, I was looking for the ice flies that I lost). I reeled up a worm/marshmallow and finally had a bite. After that I used a gold Kastmaster, threw out as far as I could and let it sink. I ended up catching several beautiful browns and an oriental family video taped some of my catches and took pictures with me. I've never been able to duplicate that on DC again.
Thanks for the report, it brought back some good memories.

Nice report. Always nice to finally get into the groove, find what the fish want and do a little catchin.
