Hey fellow bft'ers!
I am going fishing tomorrow for splake and I want some advice on how to catch them. I know where they are at in the lake now, but I'm not sure what lures or bait to use. I've only caught one splake before in my life and it was at this same lake using an ice fly tipped with a mealworm. However, it was a little guy, only 14 inches.
In your experiences what has worked best when ice fishing for splake that are around 3-5 pounds? Do I need to buy chub meat, shrimp, an alpaca, or fish them how you would fish any other trout?
Thanks in advice for any help!

I find that goats are more productive for big splake vs alpacas.
Kidding, sorry can't help with splake but I imagine any trout techniques that have worked for you in the past would work well.

Last night at the UDWR seminar the biologist recommended tipping a lure with cut bait when fishing for splake. That has also been my experience for both splake and tiger trout.

This time of year I have had the best luck with a vertical jig, usually a 1/2 to 1 ounce weight with a squid like plastic over it. I tend to use a piece of chub meat a little bit smaller than an inch by inch. (similar that what I would use for lake trout in the same size range.)
Most of the splake I have caught were closer to the bottom.
Good luck and let us know how you do !

We catch them on jigs with perch meat in Fish Lake Try a Northland rattle spoon on the bottom with a #8 lime green rat finke 16 to 18" above. Always close to the bottom in nearly 30' fow

A whole small minnow (3-4") on a regular 1/8 oz. jighead hook works well also. Sometimes simple is better.

Good lookin' splake. One of those that looks more brook trout than lake trout.

I'd say. I'm no trout expert but I'd lose money if that wasn't a brookie.
