Report Perch Tourna. Fish Lake
#1
My goodness, what it day it has been at Fish Lake. I want to thank everyone that participated and for those that traveled so far and made such a tremendous effort to help us with this project.

We had sportsmen and their families from Wyoming, Idaho, Nevada and Utah and possible other States that I didn’t have the opportunity to visit with.

Now that the Fish Lake Perch Tournament has concluded, I’d like to share a little information about the event.

Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and Utah’s Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife held a fishing clinic at Fish Lake last February and decided, after the success of the clinic, maybe we could hold a tournament and help remove some of the over populated perch from the Lake. In November of 2014 UDWR asked SFW-Richfield Chapter if they would host the tournament and we agreed. In reality, the UDWR did the yeomen’s share of the work, prior to the tournament and during the tournament. SFW’s was able to provide the seed funding for the prizes for the tournament and provide a few volunteers to assist the UDWR folks at the tournament.

We estimated “not more” than 300 participants. And good ice by January 24, 2015. We still had open ice on Fish Lake on January 12. From that day until today, we watched the ice slowly build and were still concerned as last as Tuesday January 20. The UDWR checked ice depth every day from January 12, including this morning at daylight. By this morning, with a week of cold nights and relatively mild but still cool day time temperatures, the lake ice grew in thinness, from 4 inch to as much as nine inches. The UDWR pronounced it safe, but encouraged appropriate caution and discourage ATV use on the lake. The participants were wonderful, and respected and honored the request. We all had a near perfect day on the lake.

We knew interest had grown beyond 300, early last week, but had no way to know to what extent. The Burbot Bash at Flaming Gorge was canceled and we knew we would get a hit from there, but again, had no idea to what extent.

We increased our registration locations from one to five. UDWR sent out a call, State wide for assistance from their employees, dozens responded, from as far away as Vernal. SFW sent it's Fishing Coordinator Kenny Smith and SFW volunteers traveled from Provo, St. George, Cedar City and Beaver to assist the small Richfield Chapter.

By 8:00 a.m. this morning, with tremendous effort and hard work by the UDWR and SFW’s folks, over 1,500 perch fishermen were on the ice and catching perch, before noon the count had exceeded 1.700. Our goal was to remove 10,000 perch from Fish Lake. While I have know way of actually know what the total removal was I am confident that is exceeded that number and may have exceeded it by a considerable amount.

We started out with the $2,500 from SFW, to provide prizes/incentives and before we completed our effort we gave out over $6,000 worth of sporting goods, thanks to our very generous business community, that donated outright and/or provided deep discounts for the prizes and raffle items.

I spent the entire day, from 5:45 a.m. until we wrapped up the event at 4:00 p.m. visiting with participants and volunteers. I never received a single negative comment, not one, not from participants, volunteers, UDWR personnel, US Forest Service Staff and Sevier County Sheriff’s Department, Sevier County Emergency Rescue the Fish Lake Lodge owners or anyone else.

I was truly an amazing day. I am so grateful for Heather Talley and Richfield Hepworth, UDWR Biologists from the UDWR Cedar City Office who dreamed the dream and did the work along with outstand support from UDWR employees from across the State, the State Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife Executive Officers, who provided the seed funding, and the many SFW volunteers that worked tirelessly, all day long, to make this event a success.

Thank you, thank you for coming, thank you for bringing such a great attitudes and thank you all for being the great people that you are and for supporting the outdoor lifestyle that we all love and want to preserve and grow for future generations.

Great report.
How was the parking?

It was amazing. Without a single parking attendant, everyone "self parked" as if an army of police put them in their stalls. It was as tight and as full as you can image. Packed to the limits, the Highway was lined with vehicles, not a single person complained, crowded, cut anyone off, I absolutely couldn't believe it.

People can be fricking phenomenal when they decide they are going to work together and make the best of a tough situation and they sure did it today.

Fish Lake Lodge has a Facebook account. They had some pictures posted on their wall with all the tents out on the lake and a video of the parking lots. Looked like it was a huge party out on the ice.....

We attended and we had a blast not a single complaint here. I was skeptical about fishing there the same week as the tournament dt the crowds but the fishing was actually amazing. We fished the first few hours by the highway side then made the journey to the other side away from the crowds and glad we did. Fishing couldnt have been better. The splake and bow fishing was 5 star. However that being said they were all really skinny so hopefully the perch removal will help w that issue a little bit.

Your chapter and the DWR are to be complimented for how the day turned out. We were there yesterday and it was astounding to see how many people were there fishing and yet there was still parking to be had and everyone was having fun. It was also very nice to see DWR personnel out among the crowds showing folks who maybe werent as knowledgable how to catch perch. Great job all.

My friends and I didnt formally register or "compete" yesterday, but nevertheless harvested a solid "quota" of perch for the fillet table and then spent the rest of the day targeting trout. Suffice it to say, our results were an adequate reminder why Fish Lake is one of the premier ice fishing destinations in the entire state.

Someone mentioned some thin trout. I noticed this too on some of the 14 to 17 inch class bows. However others in this class were nice and robust. The smaller bows seemed fine. I thought the splake looked fine, considering we are missing a year class. Also, our group caught 4 browns yesterday. I have caught them there before but very rarely. Good times!

Thanks doggonefishin.

And others that commented. It was a complement to have all the UDWR folks there having a good time with the rest of us. Being it was a Saturday I'm sure it was a sacrifice for a lot of those that came to be away from their families. I think I'll drop a note to the DWR Director and let him know how much we appreciated them.

SFW is a great conservation organization, for all species of hunt-able and fish-able wildlife. Not alway in perfect harmony with every single one of us but always attempting to build more and better hunting and fishing for everyone, generally and at times specifically. We had more SFW folks working in the back ground of the event than were visible, in as much as we are dressed just like everybody else, out on the ice.

When we work together, when we can, it's always a positive experience.

That almost looks bigger than Pikeman's perch parties he used to have.[Wink] But when he had them he had a bunch of people filleting and a bunch of people cooking. Without all the loving and caring people it could never happen. It looks like you guys done it up right. I'm hoping that somebody can chime in here. And give us a total on the heaviest per-man and maybe even the heaviest for the top three teams. Just curious. And did anybody catch a 12 incher? By the looks of things, them pics, you should have a good growing garden this summer chucker.

Three teams of four fishermen each turned in 300 perch, all before noon.

The team with the most pounds of per perch came in at about 2:45 p.m. as I recall, their perch catch weigh just under 109 pounds. Numerous other teams had over 50 pounds, many didn't both to weigh in because they knew they didn't have as many as some other team. There were hundred and hundreds of pounds catch. If each participant caught 5 perch, that would equate to approximately 1,700 pounds. Stunning! And that may be far too conservative.

The first 3 men to catch 75 and the first 3 men to catch 150 were awarded between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., as I recall.

The first 3 women to catch 75 were awarded quite early as well. Not all of the 3 prizes for the women's 150 perch were awarded, so the remaining prizes were given our as raffle items.

I doesn't recall, although the UDWR wrote everything down, so far as names and weighs of the individual's most weigh contests, but I'll say this: " the lady that won the .22 rifle for the individual women's contest gave me a hug I won't forget any time soon" ;-).

If you estimate about 5 perch per pound, that's a far number of the tasty little critters. The team with the most weight had an estimated 550 perch for the day.

Thank you to all the people who helped and all the anglers who showed up and participated. Some people have been asking about numbers. Here are our best estimates for the Tournament:

Total Participants - 1,737
Total Estimated Perch Harvested - 40,000 (20 perch per person average)
Winning Team (4-people) - 108 lbs (estimated - 800 perch)
Second Place Team - 106 lbs

We will be putting out a news release with additional information and numbers.

Thanks again to everyone who participated

It's nice to hear that SFW has finally done something for the average joe fisherman. It's not surprising, though, to have SFW come on a forum and pat themselves on the back and tell everyone how great they. Get's old.

Come one dude, give them a break, they helped the DWR take care of a problem that could aid everyone that fish FL and they helped make it a fun day for a lot of people. Why go and give and the SFW a hard time for doing something that needed to be done. I give props to SFW and chucker for spending a day helping others, how often do you spend a day helping others for a sport we all love to do. Uncool dude.[:|]

It is clear that you don't understand the situation. The DWR contacted them and asked them to help. I talked to the gentleman (chucker) at the tournament. He told me that this site was suggested to him. He also liked the fact that people got along well and there wasn't a lot of hostility. You just blew a very positive image of bigfish with a person that put in a lot of time to help the DWR get a huge crowd to come and help with the perch problem. I read his post and he was patting a lot of people from several agencies on the back.
It was a tremendous success and there were lots of people that helped and he made a great effort to thank all of them. I think your complaint is unfair and doesn't reflect the feelings of the majority of us that use bigfish.
