best laid plans...
#1
The weather patterns for the last month or two had been so favorable I decided to put a trip to the Green River together for a handful of buddies. I laid the plans and made the reservations only to have the weather take a turn on us the very weekend we were shooting for. So rather than fight the snow and cold temps where I really want to go, I have been entertaining the idea of finding some new water in a more favorable part of the state. Has anyone fished any of the following water or have any suggestions on where we could go?

Fremont river - reports say it's fishing good above mill meadow?

Oak Creek - One of the few trout holdings west of I-15. the weather out here looks the best but I have no idea how it fishes. Note: I am looking at the oak creek near oak city but i am not opposed to the oak creek in the capitol reef area if anyone has good reports.

Filmore Area - (chalk creek, meadow creek, corn creek)

Mill Creek and Kens lake - In the Moab area

Under normal circumstances I would probably just wait and hit up the green on a more favorable weekend. But this will be the last weekend for one of the guys before his wife has their third baby. He is going to be out of commission for a few months and we want to get him out before he does his time on the inside. There will be a total of six guys with and two of them are beginners.

Thanks in advance!

Southern Utah got hit much harder with snow (and still is) than we got here. Only a few inches, tops, on the river.

I don't think a small stream is a good place for 6 buddies and two beginners. You need bigger water with lots of room and variety. How about the San Juan in NM? They've got snow too though, but its not as cold generally. Lee's Ferry?

On the Green, temperatures will likely still get above freezing this weekend, and the canyon has a little protection from winds. The Green on a cold blustery day still beats anything else in Utah for numbers of catchable fish and a good amount of fishable water. There's thousands of trout within eyesight of where you can park your vehicle to warm up at any time. And, the weather will keep everyone else home, you'll have it mostly to yourself.

I'm with Jim on is one. I would still hit the green over any of the other options you have suggested. My suggestions for patterns are small, size 22 at the biggest hares ears, tie them on a scud curved hook.

Small copper johns in copper, black, and green. Sizes 20 - 24.

And micro eggs if you go fishing below little hole. Not sure why they work at this time of year but they do.

Good luck!!

If you make it to the Green, don't be afraid to fish some #18's and even #16's too. Food is still a little sparse down here, and the fish are very appreciative of something with a little more substance than another #22 midge. They'll eat #18's and #20's all day. Afternoons will be better than mornings, so sleep in and eat breakfast while it warms up a little. You should do fine.

Oak Creek is very small. I can step across it.

This last year, when I was up there, a lot of the canyon was still closed due to washouts and flooding. It got hit really hard after the fires up there. I don't know how many fish will survive it.

The Green sounds like a good choice for a group.

Good luck!
