salmon river reports?
#1
Anyone been after steelhead lately? Headed up Friday for the day, not sure where to go. Probably end up at the Lemhi hole or Deergulch. Any info will be appreciated. I'll post a report Saturday, hopefully with some awesome pictures [Wink].

The report I have from today is that the river below east fork is high and muddy. Heading up Saturday and hoping things improve. Good luck!

Just hoping that when things calm down the fish are willing to play. I also heard lots of fish have made it into the hatchery. Pretty early for lots of fish that far up

I fished with my brother and my friend from the 11th to the 13th and we caught 1 fish a piece. The 46 degree water has given the fish lock jaw. We fished for 1 1/2 days below Shoup and 1 1/2 days at Ellis. Plenty of fish in the hatchery. Sad that the season seems to be over already because of the warm weather and high water.

Fishing wasn't any good. Started out before light at DeerGulch. Water was a little high and a little off color but not horrible. Went above Challis to Slat Creek, and Torres hole, water was a little clearer but the fish only have one thing on their mind and it's not eating. Never saw anyone catch a fish, didn't talk to anyone who had touched a fish. Did see lots of eagles, deer, elk, antelope, and big horn sheep so that was worth the trip.

Fair warning I didn't reduce the size of the pictures. They just show the water clarity.

When did you fish? My Buddy, my girlfriend, and I fished today mid morning until about dark. Had the drift boat out. Each of them caught their first steelhead. Fished below town. i didn't touch a fish but was pretty happy to see someone catching fish!! Must have been some beginners luck! Water seemed to be getting better clarity by late afternoon. both fish were unclipped fish.

Just got back from challis. The best fishing we had was yesterday. The fishing isn't red hot, but it's improving. Six fish landed, lost 3 others. Lots of wild fish.. Water clarity was much improved and seemed to be better today as we drove home. Flows are down as well. The run is definitely still going strong, and if conditions continue to improve, I would say fishing will be good. Good luck to those who make it out there!

Fished the upper river 3/25 with 2 grandsons. Started at Sawtooth. Small buck on first cast w/brown helgie and green metallic corkie. Passed the rod off to a grandson while I rigged a 2nd rod. Tied a shrimp fly with orange corkie on the 2nd one. Released the fish on the first rod and the grandson with that rod cast out and hooked one on his own, another 24" buck, his first steelhead on his own. I think he's hooked for life. Meanwhile I finally got my own rod set up with 8mm orange beads and hooked and landed 3 more plus the other grandson used my rod to catch his first steelhead. We fished that spot for about 2 hours and landed 6 steelhead, 3 on beads and 3 on the helgie. Took a lunch break and moved down by the Yankee Fork. We did even better there hooking 16 and landing 12. The fish there were larger and in better shape. Again we fished for about 2 hours, then headed to Challis for a burger and the long drive home. Overall a great day. Had 2 groups of friends go 3/27 and it was much slower. They caught none at the Yankee Fork, 2 at Sawtooth and a couple by Clayton. They indicated the water was rising again. The fish are there if you can hit it right when they will bite. The reports from Ellis are about identical. Hopefully the cooler weather this week will improve the bite. I'll try to figure out how to add some photos.
