Lindon Cattin' with Kevin 5-4-15
#1
[#0000FF]Met up with Albinotrout at Lindon this morning. On the water a little after 6. Air temps almost 60. Water temps 65 at launch and 68 just before noon.

I got launched first. Made a few casts going out of the harbor. No interruptions on my retrieves. Ditto for out around the dike and points going into the lake. Did see a few carp cruising the surface of the calm water.

Headed for the bubbleup. Had to get a long way from shore to find 4' depths. Stopped to make some casts a couple of times on the way. Dinged a couple of white bass and put 'em in the basket for future reference (bait). Glad I did.

Less than 4 feet of water at the buoy at the end of of the bubbleup pipe. No outflow. Only a few bubbles in a couple of places to verify there was a pipe there. No willing fishies to bite my bitty jigs.

Started dragging a whole small white bass on a bait rod. Didn't take long to get my first inquiry. A Lindon cookie cutter...about 22 inches. Then a small skinny mudder that ate another baby white bass...almost as big as he was.

AT arrived and I suggested he work the area I had been finding some love. It worked well enough to bring in at least one nice kitty. See the pics.

After that I moved up and down the buoy line, trying to find some white bass or walleyes...any thing besides cats. No way. But did get my smallest cat of the day in about 2 feet of water. Only about 15 inches. Now if I could put two of those end to end I would have a good contest entry.

Moved over to the other side of the buoy line and continued dragging bait on one rod and pitching small tubes on the other. Picked up another basket cat...for the smoker...and whiffed another. Then had something bite my heavy leader off after a "funny" chomp and run. Pike? Could be. Cain't prove it.

With no encouragement from other species around the bubbleup I began working slowly back toward the harbor. Picked up a couple more "cookies" and was running out of the frozen baby white bass I had brought. So I filleted one of the whities I caught earlier.

The first piece had barely settled to the bottom when the line popped from the clip and went peeling off the open bail reel spool. Set the hook and the beast on the other end put the line over its shoulder and ripped some serious yardage off the drag. Yeeee hawww. I figgered it would be my first 30 incher for the contest. Nay. After almost fifteen minutes of hand to fin combat I put the net under a feisty two footer. Must have beat up on some other angler too. There was a nice circle hook protruding from one corner of its mouth. No escape this time. She was going home to meet my smoker.

The rest of the story? That first strip of white bass meat stayed on the hook for three more decent catfish. One finally swallowed it and I cut it off before releasing that fish.

Don't really count fish much anymore. But I kept five for the smoker and released at least that many more. Bent my stick and stretched my string just fine, thank y'all. With the water temps warming up the cats have got some serious kick butt fight in 'em now. Almost all the ones cookie cutter or larger made at least short runs against the drag.

Not sure how AT finished up. My knee started to complaining about 10ish...and the SW breezes began to kick up a little...along with some big huffy puffy clouds around the horizon. So I left the rest of the fish for AT and made an early departure.

It was good to meet up with you again Pat. I ended up with one channel cat and one mudder. I did have a really good hit and run but didn't get the hook set fast enough before it boogied. Thanks for the extra bait. I brought home the leftovers and stuck them in the freezer for next time. Just don't tell mamatrout she will flip.[:p] I ended up leaving around 12:30 ish, didn't like the look of the clouds in the distance and needed a break as well. Next week I am planning LB whether I like it or not. I need some more kitty lovin..(and whities too).

Great post as always and it's great hear the kitties are getting excited for summer too. Hopefully that knee of yours will improve so you can get some more quality time in on the water.

[#0000FF]Thought about you today ol' buddy. I was catching cats where you did some damage last year.

Knee is getting much better. Just a bit weak yet. Going tubing and covering long distances three times in one week will either help it...or ?

[#0000FF]As per the contracts with downstream water users they HAVE been releasing water from Utah Lake since April 1. It was already very low and has dropped several inches since...in spite of a minimal amount of runoff water.

What will it look like in the fall? Nasty. It is likely that anything larger than a flatbottom duck boat will be unable to launch and navigate through the harbors by late summer.

We talked to the water people cause we don't irrigation water yet and they informed us that its still not being released from Utah lake yet. I also don't fully understand how the water level could be dropping even with low snow fall. We've had decent rain where it should be at least maintaining the water level.

Dude, you need to find a new source of information!
I posted here 30 days ago the head gates to the JR had been opened and that UL had begun getting it's yearly draining.

What better source do I need? At the home I live in we don't have irrigation water yet and when we called they said its because Utah lake hasn't released water yet. I don't know why but they had it open for a bit back then but it hasn't for the last while. Right now the Jordan river is as low as it gets.

I drive over the river every day on the south end of the lake and I can garuantee that those gates have been open for a month. Somebody must be blowing smoke on the reason you don't have irrigation water.

Hey Pat looks like you had another great trip, thanks for sharing it with us... I know what you're saying about those cats being fun of fire and fight lately, they are so dang much fun.... Just loving that a two footer can feel like a monster... Had one do the same thing to me last night, lots of fun... Well one of these days I need to keep a couple cats and have you teach me how to smokem again... I'm forgetful, I know you told me last year how to do it, but I didn't write it down and so I lost it... but I do remember how good your smoked cat is... Thanks for the tale... Later J

"Nothing quite like fresh bait uh?"

[#0000FF]Yeah. Like the old saying goes "There's a lot of fish in the ocean. Just don't let your bait get stale." But I somehow don't believe that is related to fishing only.

I chortle and guffaw everytime someone posts on this board how their "never fail" bait is some commercially prepared toxic waste dough product. Or that they learned how to fish only at night, using rancid chicken livers or whatever. Over the years I have tried all those things too. I have caught a few fish on them, but I consistently catch far more and bigger fish using the baits most likely to be on the local menu. And that usually includes (legal) fish parts or whole fish of the species most common in those specific waters...carp, perch, white bass, etc.

In Utah Lake one of the main forage species...for all predators...is white bass. And while using frozen and rethawed white bass and white bass parts is better than non-natural concoctions it is tough to beat fresh caught.

During the late summer there are gazillions of baby white bass in the harbors. They are anywhere from 3 to 5 inches. You can catch a day's supply quickly with a couple of small jigs...or a bucket full to freeze for future trips. Kill them and properly rig them whole and you can catch almost anything in the lake. But any time you catch a larger white bass and turn it into fluttery bait strips you got MONEY.

[#0000FF]First you gotta find papers big enough. Then you gotta figure out which end to light. Yeah, I've heard all the jokes about smoking fish.

Here are two pictorials...one showing how I currently slice and dice the fish before smoking. The second shows the smoking process. I will address a common observation...for my process of preparation of catfish for smoking. That is that there is some "waste". There is. But the small bits I trim off are minimal compared to the added space I get in the smoker...between pieces...and the improved overall taste of the end product by eliminating the thin pieces with disproportionate untrimmed red flesh still attached. The red flesh is both oily and nasty tasting. You wouldn't ever wanna eat a piece of that stuff all by itself so why leave it on the good parts?

Obviously there are lots of ways to do it and everybody has their own preferences in how they want the final product to taste, the degree of dryness and doneness, etc. This is just how I do it. And there are a lot more folks who like it than otherwise.

Yep... I hear you.

A lot of people just don't understand channel cats and how predatory they are. Of course they will eat a dead prey item... nothing like an easy meal.... but they are fine tuned feeding machines and have no problem chasing down baitfish or larger prey items... In the vast majority of waters, they prefer live meals to dead ones...

So like you, I cringe when I hear of people using "rotten" chicken livers and all sorts of other odd baits. Or when I hear the word "bottom feeder" to describe cats.

My go to is frozen cut-bait of a species present in the lake like you said... but if I can somehow get a fresh carp or sucker during the day while I'm catfishing... it really is amazing how well it works compared to previously frozen stuff. You can SEE the difference and feel the difference... the fresh stuff has a nice slimy coat of oils and amino acids.. you drop your bait in the water and you can see the cloud. Seems like those baits don't last too long without getting molested. I think too that freezing any kind of cut-bait changes the consistency of the bait... freezing / thawing action kind of "wears" on a bait.

Cheers.
