2015 Tom

I haven't had much time to get on here, so I will make this short and sweet like the hunt was.

I left my house in Utah county at 3:00 AM Sunday to get out to the basin and set up before the birds came off the roost. Set up in my first location, and it was quiet. A little too quite. Only saw 2 hens, 2 elk, and about 10 deer. So, I moved towards the other end of the property. Came up to a field and found about a dozen turkeys, with two good toms strutting away. Dang, picked the wrong field to set up in. Well, I planned a stalk. Got to about 60 yards, when they all start running. Now, I know they hadn't seen me... What do you know.... dang coyote chasing them just as I was getting close to in range. I watched them fly up into a couple big cottonwoods and just gobble down at him. I was in disbelief. He just sat at the base of one of the trees, scratching his ears. So, I waited him out until he left. The toms flew down after the first hen, then the others followed about 5 minutes later. I was able to sneak down a tree row, watch them strutting around, and finally come down a fence line to me. BOOM, turkey down. Pretty similar to my bird last year. 9" Beard, 3/4" spurs. Back home in Orem by Noon.

Really wanted to shoot one with my new bow this year, but have been so busy with work that only had the one day to hunt. So, went with the "sure thing" ole' 870.
Turns out, I shot this guy at about 30 yards, with plenty of cover and an open shot. Would have been perfect to break in the new ChillR.

Congrats on the Tom. Are you and your dad headed back up to WY. hunting this fall?

No, I think we are going to give it a year or two to rebound. That EHD seems to have done a number on them.
We are looking at Idaho rifle deer, or Colorado archery Elk. OTC hunt either way.

I don't think we are going to head back up until next season. Our friends where we stay just got back a month ago from a mission in Africa and after talking to him last weekend he said he was not seeing the number of deer he normally sees on his place and hasn't seen a buck since he returned. Good luck on where ever you plan to go, we will just apply for points up in WY. again this year.
