Provo whitefish
#1
Does anybody do well for whitefish anywhere on the Provo? If so, what usually works best?

It is to my understanding that the provo dont hold whitefish, It does have some whiteBASS twords the lower end. and if that is what you are targeting use pink jigs this time of year. also try the heddon sonor flash from what some guys are saying. Now I may be wrong about the provo and whitefish and if it does use the regulars and small fly work great I have heard the wd-40's or any type of bead head will produce the best.

Provo's got whitefish, they are just far and few between. If you want the whities head to the Weber river.

The only whitefish I have caught on the Provo was about two years ago fly fishing by the new little park with the sand volley ball court that is not far up the canyon from the mouth of the canyon. The park is on the left side of the road and has a round about as the main entrance.

If I remember correctly I caught the whitefish on an olive scud I had dragging below a BWO. I have only fly fished a couple of times so I just considered myself lucky to have caught anything that day. If you need somebody to fish the river with let me know because I would love to go with somebody that has more experience than me.

I looked up your info and saw that you are from Springville and work for DWR. Did you get involved in that carp kill we had back in October? What a mess that turned out to be.

Anyway, good luck finding some white fish. I wish I had more info for you but this has totally exhausted by knowledge resources.

I was an official Provo River Carp Herder. You're right--it's the biggest mess I've ever been involved with.

If your looking to catch whitefish, try the Weber River. I've had good success below rockport after the I-80 bridge. Try hares ears, prince nymphs, and pheasant tails, all bead heads and size 18. Try the deeper holes, and Usually these patterns will produce some decent whitefish, browns, and rainbows. Good luck!

I seen you work the DWR biologist as an aid so why didn't you just ask him about whites on the provo or call the biologist over the provo? Are you still doing that job or was it temperary summer work?

I have had the unfortunate luck of catching more whitefish on the Provo than browns. They are definitely in there. I haven't been for while but I would catch them on a chamois caddis right near the bottom. I caught them in the flies-only section a ways below Deek Creek dam, about where the road from Sundance comes down.

Were you involved in the Springville mess or the Provo carp roundup they had a while ago. If you were involved in Springville I probably met you or heard your name thrown around. It was my investigation and I agree, it was a mess and still is.
