I was up there last weekend. The road is all snowed in and you will not get a vehicle past the turnoff at the intersection. I rode the snow mobile a couple miles down the road. A wheeler may make it, but as someone once said, "doesn't matter what color you paint it, it is still not a snowmobile". The road had not been groomed last week. I may be heading to Renegade Saturday, but I will travel by snowmobile and unless the lake ice is thick enough, I will drive the road.

We were up there today. The snow was pushed high. Only the road to the marina was plowed/ice packed. I would only navigate to renegade with a snow machine or atv with trax. And either take the road or the edges of the ice. I would trust blazing across the main body for another week.

Seen two guys blazing across strawberry two days ago. They were hauling a$$ with no ice fishing gear thou. I would give it another week but everywhere i drilled was 5 to 6 inches plus. I drilled one hole in jakes bay that was close to 10 inches.

In theory, if the ice will support a person, it will support a snow mobile. The weight distribution is far better on a snow mobile than on foot. However, even though I know that to be true, my feeble mind keeps saying 500 lbs of machine vs 230 lbs of a person is not the same. If you break it down in surface area by square inches, the snow machine on paper out performs the person on foot. That being said, I will take my machine out on 6 inches of ice, and have many a time with no problems.
It is looking like I will be heading to Renegade in the morning. I expect the fishing to be fantastic with the bay pretty much to myself. Least wise that is the norm. Should I actually go, I will post some pictures and the results tomorrow. [signature] |
