Perch fishing at night?
#1
I do quite a bit of ice fishing for trout at night during the season, mostly from 10:00pm to 2:00am ish.... Its a weird time, but it works with my schedule. I was wondering if anybody has had success with catching perch at night. I have caught them during the day, but haven't tried them at night. I have caught them quite a bit during daylight hours, but I might give them a go one night this week.
Thanks,
Conner

From what I have personally seen and then heard from other anglers, perch shutdown at night. You might catch a few after sun goes down but not typically. Go after the crappie instead, they seem to do good after dark along with trout.

Just my .02 cents worth.

I too have never caught one when its dark. I do believe the little buggers sleep at night. Real interested if you are successful. 👍

Perch are a sight predator. Very few will be caught after dark. Have fished in places early AM with no light and caught lots of trout, then as soon as there is enough light on the water have caught perch in the same location. But we got no perch till it was light.

This was my experience last week at Starvation. Caught a nice rainbow in the dark, sun came up and we caught perch in the same holes.guess I'll have to plan a day trip....[bobSad]

Sounds like an excellent opportunity for targeting walleye!

I've been wanting to ice fish for walleye. Now that I've got a big ice fishing tent, I might bring a cot and sleeping bag and stay a night and do some night and some early morning fishing, too.

The key time a few years ago at Starvation for the big perch was the 1st hr. in the morning as it was getting light enough to see your pole and the last 45 minutes or so before dark. Tried fishing before daylight and after dark and they just quit biting even disappeared on the fish finder. You could catch a few big perch during the day but we didn't find it very good so we would head in to Duchesne for breakfast and come back later in the afternoon. Before Yuba perch fishing crashed years ago you could catch the big jumbos on and off all day long. C.J. Strike in Idaho was the same way in that you could catch big perch (10-12 in.) all throughout the day especially if you moved and got away from the crowds. Good luck on your next trip.

I have caught them in the darkness of the really early morning, but not really after dark.

At PV, it used to get hot right when the sun was going down and the light was changing, but it would usually just quit cold turkey once the sun was good and down, behind the mountains, and it was getting actually dark rather than twilight.
