Anyone heading to the Columbia?
#1
Wife and I are heading to the Columbia River for the Kings/Silvers run in Aug. Will be fishing the coastal water and buoy 10 areas for two weeks and hoping the King run will be as great as last year.

Would like to know if any other Utah BFT'ers are planning to be there this year. Trueblue

I am heading that way this Thurs-Sat. Fishing Halibut/Salmon off the Columbia Bar near Tillamook. Then we usually go up near Astoria and chase Kings in the river. Last year was great fishing with limits of Halibut (46 lb. was my best) and near limits of Silvers & Kings. (including a 36 pounder) My fishing buddy in OR says the fishing has been really good right now in both the salt and the Columbia River. Best of luck!

We haven't done any halibut fishing up there yet. If you get a chance, send me a PM on where you go and how you do it. Would love to pick up a couple of halibut or ling cod, too.

We rented a house in Ilwaco and have a slip for the month in the marina. Can pull the boat out and run down to Tillamook for a day. Do they have halibut charters out of there to your knowledge?

Havent been to that area but Halibut are pretty easy. Look for shelfs and they will hang out on the edge of them. If it is a spot where there is something to break the current of the tide change get on the protected side of the structure by the drop off and those are the typical spots. Hour before tide change and until an hour after is the money time for them.

As far as setup Ive caught them two ways. 1 With a big jig with half a herring on it and just jig it a couple of feet off the bottom. The other setup is a 1lb or up to 3 lb ball weight on the bottom and a foot above it a line coming off with a circle hook and either herring or a salmon steak on it. Then a foot above that another line coming off (these are premade by the way, can buy them out on the coast). With this setup drop the ball to the bottom and then reel up till the line is taunt but keep the weight on the bottom. Then when you feel something munching instead of setting the hook you actually let them take a little line and then after 4-5 feet just pull it snug, don't set it, just pull snug. Circle hooks take a different hook set entirely than what most salmon/trout guys are used to.

We did a self guided trip 2 years ago west of Junea and caught quite a few with the biggest of the trip being a 123lber I hooked up with the last day.

We generally go out about 20 mi from Garibaldi for Halibut. Typical depths are about 200-400 ft. Whole Anchovies on the bottom or you can do jigs tipped with bait. Lots of charters around Tillamook and Garibaldi. I go with a friend, so never have actually searched for them. On the way back in, you can troll for Salmon. Kings & Silvers are both hot right now. Big Fall King run projected from now until November (960,000 fish). Good luck! I'll post a report when I get back next week.
